Doug Elder (1981-84) was a member of four NAIA National Tournament qualifiers during his four-year playing career at MSU and helped the Indians to consecutive national finalist showings in 1982 and 1983 at the MSU Soccer Field. He earned first-team NSCAA/adidas All-America honors after his senior season of 1984 as a defender. Elder returned to his alma mater in 2000 to head the men's soccer programs and remains as NCAA Division II's winningest head coach.
