WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State opened its conference campaign with a victory over Lubbock Christian on Wednesday night and returns home to host unbeaten UT Tyler at Stang Park on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs are 5-1-0 overall to start the season and have a 3-0-0 record at home. MSU rebounded from its first loss of the season when
Nyxalee Munoz scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute, and the Mustangs defeated Lubbock Christian, 2-1.
Munoz scored for the third time this season, and it was her second game-winning goal of the season as she also secured a 1-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist with a goal in the 56th minute.
Madison Brinkley opened the scoring at LCU with a goal in the fourth minute. Brinkley scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, and
Allessandra Romano had her fourth assist of the campaign.
Brinkley is the second-leading goal scorer in the Lone Star Conference and has the 11th-most goals among NCAA Division II players. Romano is leading the league in assists and has the 10th-most assists in the nation.
Midwestern State has a plus-9 goal differential and has scored the third-most goals in the LSC this season with 14. The Mustangs are averaging 6.17 points per game, which is fifth-best in the LSC.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Allison Dellis is second in the conference with a save percentage of .886 and 6.5 saves per game.
Dellis made six saves at Lubbock Christian and improved to 5-1-0 for the season with a goals against average of 0.83. The Denton native has one clean sheet but has not conceded more than one goal in any match this season.
UT Tyler is off to the best start in the history of the program with a 5-0-1 record following a 0-0 draw with St. Edward's at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex on Wednesday night. Emily Clark made her only save of the match in the fourth minute for the Patriots, who dominated possession and hit the post twice during the match.
The Patriots have outscored their opponents this season, 21-1, and are the top scoring team in the LSC with 3.5 goals per game, which is fourth best among NCAA Division II programs.
Natalie Jones is the leading goal scorer for the Patriots with four, and Marin Love has scored three goals for UT Tyler.
UT Tyler is seeking its first-ever win over Midwestern State, which leads the all-time series, 5-0-1. The Mustangs have won the last five meetings, including a 1-0 victory in the regular season finale at Tyler last season. Dellis made six saves, and
Maya Warrior scored in the 58th minute off a corner kick from
McKenna Jenkins.
Midwestern State closed out the 2019 season with a 1-1 draw against UT Tyler at Stang Park and defeated the Patriots, 2-1, when they visited two years ago.
The Stang Gang travels to Texas Woman's for their next match on Wednesday. Kickoff at Pioneer Soccer Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
