Mustangs visit defending LSC champions

DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State is on the road to face No. 2-ranked Texas Woman's at Kitty Magee Arena on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

The Mustangs ended a three-game slide with a 76-42 win over UT Dallas before the Thanksgiving holiday and improved its overall record to 2-5. MSU is 0-1 in conference play after suffering an 87-61 loss at Lubbock Christian on Nov. 23.

The Mustangs are 0-3 on the road to start the season and are 11th in the Lone Star Conference with 58.1 points scored per game. MSU is holding teams to 63.7 points per game.

Zarria Carter notched her fifth double-double of the season in the win over UT Dallas. Carter finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds. Carter leads the nation among NCAA Division II players with five double-doubles.

Carter also leads the nation with 6.7 offensive rebounds per game. She is the third-leading rebounder in the country with 12 boards per game. The 6-1 forward is 19th in the nation and second in the conference with 19.3 points per game.

The senior from Mansfield, Texas, is second in the conference with a field goal percentage of 52.4 (55 of 105). She is also second in the league in field goals made and attempted.

Carter leads the LSC with 18 steals and is fifth in the league with eight blocks.

Midwestern State is second in the LSC and 34th in the nation with 43.3 rebounds per game, and the Mustangs are second in the nation with 17 offensive rebounds per game.

Freshman swingman Kerbie Cash is the second-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder for the Mustangs. Cash is scoring 9.1 points per game and pulling down 5.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Emillia Steele is scoring 7.1 points per game while grabbing 4.1 rebounds per contest. Freshman Calyssa Sevier is pitching in 6.9 points per game, and fellow frosh Trinidi King is pulling down four rebounds per contest.

Junior Catalina Cortez and freshman Carisa Cortez, sisters from Lubbock, Texas, have combined for 26 assists through the first seven games. Carisa has 14 assists and is playing 28.3 minutes per game, while Catalina has 12 assists and is playing 13.1 minutes per game.

Midwestern State is shooting 33.5 percent from the field overall and 20.2 percent from 3-point range.

The Mustangs are shooting 64.7 percent from the free-throw line (95 of 147) and are attempting the third-most free throws in the LSC with 21 attempts per game. MSU is hitting 13.6 free throws per game, which is sixth most in the conference.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with TWU, 41-29, but has lost its last three meetings with the Pioneers by an average of 19.33 points per game.

TWU won the last encounter at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, 90-72, as Scout Huffman, Averee Kleinhans and Leila Patel each scored 19 points for the Pioneers, who shot 52.5 percent from the field. Kyla Speights had 12 points and four assists in the loss for MSU.

The Pioneers are coming off an 83-75 win over Central Oklahoma as Scout Huffman scored 16 points and surpassed 1,000 career points at TWU. Ashley Ingram led the Pioneers with 22 points and nine rebounds. Ingram has 1,665 career points and 811 career rebounds and is second in program history in both categories behind Tammi (Julch) Williams.

TWU is 7-1 overall but lost its conference opener at UT Tyler on Nov. 23 as the Patriots held TWU to 34 percent shooting from the field. The Pioneers were 3 of 20 from beyond the arc and hit just 18-of-53 shots overall.

Ingram is the leading scorer for the Pioneers with 15.8 points per game, and she leads the team in rebounding with 8.4 boards per game. Leila Patel is scoring 11.6 points per game, and Averee Kleinhans is scoring 9.9 points per game. Huffman pitches in 9.1 points per game.

Ingram is the sixth-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder in the LSC. She also leads the team with 25 assists and seven blocks. She is tied with Jada Celsur for the team lead with 12 steals.

The Pioneers average 66.6 points per game and hold opponents to 55.9 points per game. TWU has been outrebounding its opponents 36.9 – 30.4. Opponents are shooting 37.1 percent from the field, while TWU is shooting 45.1 percent. The Pioneers are also hitting 75.4 percent of their free throws.

TWU has a five-game home winning streak dating back to last season and is 2-0 on its home floor this season, including an 83-57 win over Colorado School of Mines on Nov. 20.

The Mustangs are 23-12 all-time when visiting the Pioneers and had a three-game winning streak at Kitty Magee Arena snapped two years ago with a 90-72 defeat.

Midwestern State continues its road trip at UT Tyler on Friday. Tipoff at Louise Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 5 p.m.
