Mustangs set five school records, enjoy breakout team performance at LSC Outdoor Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State set five school records, while sending two relay teams and an individual to the medal stand on the way to piling up 43 total points to finish fifth out of 11 teams in the 2023 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships Saturday at Lubbock Christian's Track and Soccer Facility.

The point total is an all-time for the Mustangs, who also finished in the top half of the meet for the first time in program history.

MSU finished with a flourish with the 4x400-meter relay team of Daiza Jones, Jadyn Dangerfield Moore, Da'shrana Sims, and Asia Robertson earning bronze medals with a program record setting time of 3:46.93.

The Mustangs met the NCAA provisional qualifying time for the first time in program history with the 27th-best performance in Division II. MSU finished behind Texas A&M-Kingsville (3:45.06) and Angelo State (3:46.31).

Midwestern State also claimed bronze medals in the 4x100-meter relay with Kennedy Smith, Robertson, Corinne Thorpe, and Steveanna Hearn delivering a school record time of 46.74.

The time was just 0.01 seconds shy of a provisional qualifying mark as the Mustangs finished behind West Texas A&M (44.73) and Angelo State (46.22).

Elizabeth Butzke was the first Mustang on the medal stand with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:03.28. The senior from Mansfield is the fifth MSU student-athlete to medal in the event at the first since Emma Ramirez won the event in 2015.

Robertson proved to be the star for the Mustangs as the first sprinter to qualify for multiple finals as the senior from Allen had a hand in setting three school records, while scoring points in four different events.

In addition to the relay records, Robertson broke the school's 200-meter record in the preliminaries before landing with a 24.02 to finish fifth in the final. She also added the fastest wind-aided time in program history on the way to a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.78 (+4.4).

Freshman Jadyn Dangerfield Moore and Nathalia Escontrias placed fourth and fifth in the 800-meter run with times of 2:16.29 and 2:16.46, respectively. It was the first time MSU had two student-athletes qualify for the finals in the same event.

Freshman Trell'Kyrah Watkins continued to gain momentum in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fifth with a new school record time of 1:02.91, which stands as the 59th-best time in NCAA Division II this season.

Senior Peyton Lewis went out on a high note, breaking her own school record in the long jump by 5 1/2 inches. The Garland native leaped 18 feet, 7 1/4 inches to take sixth in the event.

Lewis also scored points in the triple jump on Thursday, delivering a mark of 37 feet, 7 1/4 inches to take eighth place.

Senior Alexandra Feller scored points in the 10,000-meter run, finishing eighth with a time of 40:14.77 on Thursday night.

Midwestern State's team point total of 43 are two more than the Mustangs scored in 2014 when the Lone Star Conference consisted of nine teams. MSU finished behind West Texas A&M (280.50), Angelo State (197), Texas A&M-Kingsville (102.50), and Dallas Baptist (78).
