Lone Star Conference Match
Thurs. April 25 | 11 a.m.
Lawton, Okla. | Streich-Henry Tennis Complex
Series Notes:Â MSU leads 29-24
Storylines
First Serve
Midwestern State goes for its second-straight Lone Star Conference regular season title on Thursday in a Red River Rivalry showdown with No. 17 Cameron. First serve at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex is slated for 11 a.m.
Â
Last Time Out
MSU pushed the NCAA DI 2019 Southland Conference regular season champions to the limit on Tuesday with Abilene Christian closing out a 4-3 win over the Mustangs. Sophomore
Alex Martinez Roca and freshman
Ben Westwick picked up singles wins after the Maroon and Gold won the doubles point.
Â
Doubles Decider
The doubles point has proved to be decisive for the Mustangs this season. MSU is 14-2 when grabbing the early edge and 2-2 when falling into a hole. Midwestern has won the swing point in five-straight matches.
Â
Title Defense
MSU's showdown against Cameron serves as the de-facto regular season championship match for the Lone Star Conference. Both teams boast an unbeaten record in LSC play with only their rival on the schedule remaining in conference action.
Â
The Mustangs look to repeat as conference champs for the first time in team history. MSU Texas swept through UTPB (8-1), WNMU (7-2) and Cameron (6-3) last season en-route to the team's first league crown since 2006.
Â
Tourney Time
MSU will enter the LSC Postseason Tournament as either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed depending on Thursday's results. With a win, the Mustangs would meet Western New Mexico in the opening round while a loss to the Aggies would slot MSU against UT Permian Basin.
Â
Both semifinal matches are scheduled for noon on Friday, May 3, at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.
Â
Flipping the Switch
Since falling to St. Edward's, 4-3, the Maroon and Gold have been on a tear in the last six matches. The Mustangs own a 33-9 mark in singles play over that stretch.
Â
MSU Texas has not lost more than three singles matches to a NCAA DII opponent this season while the 85 wins in singles are the 12th most in team history.
Mustangs Rise to 19
Midwestern State continued to rise in the Oracle/ITA National Rankings. The Mustangs moved up one spot to No. 19 after a win over 37th-ranked Washburn and 4-3 loss to DI Abilene Christian.
Â
Junior
Angel Palacios remained at No. 2 in the singles rankings while the doubles tandem of sophomore
Alberto Diaz and freshman
Ben Westwick rose six spots to No. 15.
Â
Regional Shakedown
The NCAA DII Men's Tennis Committee kept the South Central Region rankings the same from last week with Midwestern State holding at No. 3.
Â
MSU, which came in at No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA National Team rankings earlier today, trailed No. 17 Cameron and No. 29 St. Edward's in the regional polls.
Â
The top four teams from the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the top two teams serving as hosts for opening round action May 11-12 at their campus site. The Heartland Conference is the lone league in the region to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a required five teams in its conference. Two teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the NCAA Championship site to vie for a national title, May 21-24, at the Sanlando Park Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
Â
Pineda and Palacios Reach No. 100
Senior
Dillon Pineda became the 12th member of the 100 win club on April 5 against UT Permian Basin. The Allen native swept Marcos Silva, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 line in singles to reach the milestone.
Â
Pineda owns a 45-34 singles record and 63-32 doubles record in his four-year career at MSU Texas.
Â
Junior
Angel Palacios joined Pineda as the 13th member of the 100-win club on April 19 with a 6-2 win in doubles over Washburn's Chase Brill and Bradley Eidenmueller to open the doubles competition.
Â
Palacios needs four wins to match Brett Emerson's single-season record of 20 at the No. 1 flight.
