Mustangs meet Chaparrals for the third time with berth in national Round of 16 at stake

LUBBOCK, Texas – Midwestern State travels to Penny Gullo Tennis Center on Tuesday for a showdown with Lubbock Christian in the NCAA South Central Region I preliminary dual. First serve is scheduled for noon. Lubbock Christian, the No. 1 seed in the region, won two previous meetings with the fourth-seeded Mustangs this spring, including a 4-3 victory in the semifinals of the LSC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.

Midwestern State is 14-7 this season and 3-4 in away duals. The Mustangs only loss in seven duals at MSU Tennis Center was 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Chaparrals on April 3.

Lubbock Christian won its last four meetings with MSU, including a 4-3 victory at Penny Gullo Tennis Center last season. Midwestern State is 2-1 when visiting LCU and won its first six encounters with the Chaparrals.

MSU has won the doubles point in each of its last in each of its last five duals and was 1-1 in doubles against Lubbock Christian, which won eight of the 10 singles matches in its two previous matchups with the Mustangs.

Jose Marquez and Jack Franklin got the Mustangs started on the right foot in the dual with a 6-2 triumph over Marco Seccia and Andr Rossi Principe at No. 3 doubles in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship. Bruno Sanchez and Juan David Duque clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 win over the No. 8-ranked pairing of Mattia Ghedin and Kelly Giese at No. 1 doubles for their ninth straight doubles victory.

Sanchez and Duque suffered a 6-2 loss to Ghedin and Giese at No. 1 doubles in the first matchup.

Germano Setti and Matthew Earle were tied 5-5 with Andres De Los Rios and Pablo Segura in the conference tournament after defeating the 34th-ranked duo 6-4 in the regular season.

Seccia and Principe won No. 3 doubles at MSU Tennis Center, defeating Marquez and Cesar Loeches Llamas, 6-3.

Setti and Giese have already staged two three-set battles this season at No. 1 singles this season, with No. 4-ranked Giese pulling out narrow victories in both matches against No. 18-ranked Setti.

Setti played No. 4 singles in 2023 at Lubbock Christian and clinched a 5-2 victory for the Mustangs with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Nikita Deev.

Sanchez and Segura have met five times in the last three seasons. Sanchez leads the head-to-head, 3-2, with two straight-set victories at No. 2 singles this spring, including a 6-4, 7-6 (2) triumph in the conference tournament.

Juan David Duque and Mattia Ghedin have split two meetings this season. Duque prevailed in the conference tournament clash, 7-6 (4), 7-5, after Ghedin took the regular season match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5.

Duque played No. 6 singles against Lubbock Christian last season, scoring a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jordan Georgiev during a 4-3 dual-match loss to the Chaparrals in the 2025 LSC Men's Tennis Championship final. Blas Ruiz defeated Duque in the regular season at Penny Gullo Tennis Center, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, in a dual LCU won, 4-3.

Marquez posted a 7-5, 6-2 win against Andres De Los Rios at MSU Tennis Center last month, but De Los Rios was a 6-1, 6-4 winner in the rematch at Life Time – Plano in the conference tournament on May 1.

Georgiev defeated Matthew Earle in a tight two-setter at No. 5 singles during the regular season, but Seccia played No. 5 singles for LCU in the rematch and defeated Loeches Llamas 6-4, 6-4.

Seccia played No. 6 singles at MSU Tennis Center in April and defeated Tomas Leguizamon, 6-1, 6-3. In the LSC Tournament, Leguizamon pushed Rossi Principe to three sets but fell, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6.

Midwestern State is 71-40 in singles matches this season, and the Mustangs won the doubles point in 14 of their 21 dual matches this season.

Setti is 13-5 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs — with three losses coming against nationally ranked opponents, including his two losses to Giese.

Sanchez enters the South Central preliminary dual with a six-match winning streak and is 15-5 this season with nine wins in his last 10 singles matches.

Duque has a five-match winning streak and is 13-6 this season with a 6-4 record at No. 3 singles.

The Mustangs have four different players that have manned both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. MSU is 7-8 at No. 5 singles and 9-9 at No. 6 singles.

Sanchez and Duque are 12-5 at No. 1 doubles and have won 11 of their last 12 matches. The only loss in that span came against Giese and Ghedin of LCU on April 3 at MSU Tennis Center.

Setti and Earle are 16-2 at No. 2 doubles with a three-match winning streak. The duo won 13 straight matches after dropping its second match of the season at Nebraska Kearney. Santiago Ledesma and Abubakari Yakubu-Lea of Cameron snapped the winning streak with 6-3 victory on April 17.

Marquez has played alongside three partners at No. 3 doubles over the course of the season and is 9-11, but Marquez and Franklin have played together in the last eight duals and have a 5-2 record with a four-match winning streak.

Lubbock Christian is 21-5 this season with an 11-dual winning streak after going through the conference undefeated and winning the LSC Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 victory over UT Tyler in the final. The Chaparrals have a 14-dual home winning streak with its last loss on home soil coming against UT Tyler in April of 2024.

Giese has a 21-match winning streak at No. 1 singles and is 23-1 this season for the Chaps, who are 105-39 in singles this season.

Lubbock Christian is 51-23 in doubles during the dual-match campaign and has won the doubles point in 19 of its 26 duals this spring.

The winner of the South Central I preliminary dual advances to the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship finals May 20-24 in Surprise, Arizona along with 15 other schools. UT Tyler and Cameron are meeting in South Central II, assuring the LSC will have two schools in the national Round of 16.
