Mustangs to face two top-20 teams in Missouri this weekend

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State continues its challenging 2017 slate this weekend in Missouri with the Mustangs facing No. 12 Northwest Missouri State and No. 19 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at the John A. Bryant Tennis Center in Bolivar, Mo.  

The Mustangs open up Friday with a 1 p.m. neutral match against Northwest Missouri before facing off against the host team Southwest Baptist Saturday at noon.

MUSTANGS REMAIN AT NO. 15 IN NATIONAL POLL
- Midwestern State appeared in the top 15 in the country in the 11th-straight national poll last week, coming in at No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA Men's Division II Team Rankings
- The Mustangs stayed put at 15th after ranking in the same spot in the initial rankings of the 2016-17 season back in November
- MSU tops the South Central Region rankings, leading four other top-25 teams in the region in No. 16 Cameron, No. 23 St. Mary's, No. 24 Western New Mexico and No. 25 St. Edward's (Texas)

TOYOS EYEING 100TH CAREER WIN
- Senior Ramon Toyos comes into the weekend needing just one win to become the 11th Mustang in program history to reach 100 career dual wins
- The Torrelavega, Spain native has posted a 51-20 singles record and 48-25 slate in doubles while donning the Maroon and Gold
- Toyos can continue a string of players to reach 100 wins for the third-straight year with Kacper Boborykin (2015) and Kyle Davidson (2016) reaching the plateau their senior seasons

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State comes into the weekend with a 2-1 record and a perfect 2-0 mark against Division II competition this season
- The Mustangs opened up its Division II slate Friday with a 7-2 victory over No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney at home before recording a 6-3 win over No. 23 St. Mary's (Texas) Saturday at the Southlake Tennis Center
- Midwestern will face eight top-25 Division II teams in its first 11 matches of the season with six of those teams being ranked in the top 20
- Ramon Toyos is ranked fifth in the nation and first in the South Central Region following an ITA regional singles title in the fall
- Toyos currently sports a 2-1 record in both singles and doubles playing at No. 1 with partner Dylan Hall
- Senior Chris Norrie is also 2-1 in singles play, winning both matches last week on court six, while teaming up with Vasudev Vijayaraman for a 2-1 record playing at No. 3 doubles
- Freshman Angel Palacios carries a 2-1 singles mark competing on court four for the Mustangs 
- Midwestern State leads the region with five players ranked in the top 20 in singles with Toyos (1st), Hall (11th), Norrie (13th), Vijayaraman (16th) and sophomore Dillon Pineda (20th)

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
- Northwest Missouri State opened its season Wednesday with a 6-1 win over Division I Missouri-Kansas City at home
- The Bearcats are coming off a 21-4 campaign that included a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2016
- NWMSU is ranked 12th nationally and tops the Central Region poll
- Senior Romain Boissinot ranks 38th nationally and third in the region in singles playing at the No. 1 position for the Bearcats
- At No. 2 singles, sophomore Sergi Fontcuberta also appears in the national rankings at No. 42 while coming in fourth in the region
- Junior Mauro Tete ranks 11th in the region playing at No. 3 singles for the Bearcats
- In doubles, NWMSU sports three top-10 tandems in the regional rankings with Tete and freshman Jorge Serrano at No. 3, Boissinot and Fontcuberta at No. 6 and senior Aymeric Autones and junior Josef Altmann at No. 9
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Northwest Missouri State, 9-2, dating back to the 2002 season
- The Bearcats came away with an 8-1 victory last season in Bolivar for their first win in the series away from home
- The Mustangs are 5-1 against NWMSU in neutral site matches

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
- Southwest Baptist is 3-0 on the season and currently ranked 19th in the country and third in the Central Region following a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016
- The Bearcats are led by junior Sherif Abohabaga, who ranks sixth nationally and leads the region after claiming the ITA Central Region title in the fall
- Senior Chris Blodig and sophomore Gyorgy Agoston also rank inside the top 10 in the region at sixth and eighth, respectively
- In doubles, Gyorgy and Ferenc Agoston captured the region doubles title in October to rank fourth nationally entering the dual season
- Abohabaga and Blodig rank 25th in the country and second in the region behind the Agoston twins in doubles
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State carries a seven-match win streak into Saturday's meeting with Southwest Baptist, leading the series 12-5
- Chris Norrie clinched a 5-4 win for the Mustangs last season in Wichita Falls to rally MSU from a 4-3 deficit
- The Mustangs are 2-1 against SBU in Bolivar, last earning a 7-2 win on Apr. 6, 2013
- MSU also defeated the Bearcats, 7-2, in 2007 while SBU came away with their first home win over the Mustangs on Mar. 15, 2003

LOOKING AHEAD
- Midwestern State returns to the MSU Tennis Center for two matches next week, playing host to NAIA Doane (Neb.) on Monday at 3:30 p.m. before facing No. 20 Ferris State (Mich.) in a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinal Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free to both matches.
