Mustangs begin season at Division I TCU Tuesday

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State begins the 2017 campaign Tuesday as the 15th-ranked Mustangs take on NCAA Division I TCU indoors at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.

MUSTANGS ENTER 2017 RANKED 15TH IN THE COUNTRY
- Midwestern State appeared at No. 15 in the fall rankings of the Oracle/ITA Division II national poll released on Nov. 21
- MSU tops the South Central Region poll and is followed by Cameron, St. Mary's, St. Edward's, Western New Mexico, Colorado Mesa, Newman, Metro State, UT Permian Basin and Colorado State-Pueblo in the top 10
- The first set of national spring rankings are set to be released Feb. 22 while a new regional poll is set to come out Feb. 15
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State returns four of its top six singles players from a 2016 season that included a trip to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals for the fourth time in program history
- Senior Ramon Toyos headlines the MSU returners after claiming the ITA South Central Regional crown in September while finishing fourth at the ITA Oracle Cup to earn a national ranking of No. 5 heading into his final campaign
- Toyos prepares to lead the Mustangs to another deep postseason run after finishing 14-9 at No. 2 singles last season
- Another veteran returning for the Mustangs is senior Chris Norrie, who posted a 13-9 record competing primarily at the No. 3 position in 2016
- Sophomore Dillon Pineda led MSU with 15 dual wins last season as a true freshman with a 15-6 record, ending the season playing at No. 4 singles
- Sophomore Dylan Hall was a regular for the Mustangs singles lineup at No. 6 in the latter part of the 2016 season with a 9-7 dual record
- Entering the spring, Midwestern sports a region-best five players ranked in the top 20 in the South Central Region in Toyos (1), Hall (11), Norrie (13), junior transfer Vasudev Vijayaraman (16) and Pineda (20)
- In doubles, Toyos and Pineda come in ninth nationally and second in the region following an appearance in the ITA South Central Region Championship in the fall
- Hall and freshman Angel Palacios rank fifth in the region in doubles after a regional semifinal appearance in September while the duo of Chris and Denney Norrie come in 10th in the regional rankings
 
TOYOS EYEING 100TH CAREER WIN
- Entering his senior season, Ramon Toyos needs just five more wins to reach 100 career dual victories
- In three seasons, the Torrelavega, Spain native has compiled a 49-19 singles record and 46-24 doubles mark to rank 13th on the all-time wins list with 95 victories
- Toyos can become the 11th Mustang to reach the 100-win plateau this season with former teammate Kyle Davidson reaching 100 career wins in 2016

SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGS
- TCU comes in with a 2-2 record and ranked No. 23 in the Oracle/ITA Division I national poll
- Junior Guillermo Nuñez is the highest-ranked Horned Frog at No. 55 with a 2-1 dual record while Jerry Lopez is ranked No. 101 with a 2-1 mark
- Junior Cameron Norrie, a two-time ITA All-American, has not played for TCU the last two dual matches but sports a 2-0 record at No. 1 with both wins coming against ranked opponents
- Both Lopez (Mexico) and Norrie (Great Britain) represented their respective countries at the Davis Cup last week along with head coach David Roditi (Mexico)
- Roditi is in his seventh season at TCU with a 105-64 career record with the Horned Frogs

LOOKING AHEAD
- Midwestern State plays host to Nebraska-Kearney in its home opener Friday, Feb. 24 at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
