THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State makes its return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 with its fourth postseason showing Friday at 2 p.m. as the No. 6 seed Mustangs take on No. 3 St. Edward's in the opening round of the South Central Regional at Lion Soccer Field in Commerce.
 
The winner between the Mustangs and 10th-ranked Hilltoppers will advance to face No. 2 seed Texas A&M-Commerce in the regional semifinals Sunday at 2 p.m. All-session ticket prices are $15 for adults (18+) and $5 for students.

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS 
- Midwestern State earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning its fifth Lone Star Conference Tournament title over Texas A&M-Commerce, 5-4 in penalty kicks, last weekend in Commerce
- The Mustangs come into the postseason with a 13-5-3 record, tying for the eighth most wins in a single season since the program began in 1995
- Midwestern carries a seven-game unbeaten streak into Friday's meeting with the Hilltoppers, outscoring the opposition 14-3 in that stretch
- Junior forward Destinee Williamson leads the Mustangs with 23 points this season with 10 goals and three assists
- The Bedford native has netted six goals in the last six outings with four scores coming in the LSC Tournament to earn LSC All-Tournament team honors
- Five of Williamson's 10 goals have been game winners this season, ranking her second in the region and 14th nationally
- Senior forward Nicole Coetzer has added seven goals and three assists for 17 points for the MSU offense while freshman forward Hanna Mattinson has posted five goals and a team-best four assists for 14 points
- Junior goalkeeper Courtney Burnette became the MSU career and single-season shutout record holder following a 1-0 win over West Texas A&M in the LSC semifinals last weekend
- Burnette set a new career shutout record with her 23rd clean sheet, passing Mallory Whitworth's previous standard of 22 set in 2012
- The Irving native also became the single-season record holder with her 10th shutout of 2016, breaking Kallie Essary's record of nine set in 2013
- Burnette is the national leader in goalie minutes played with 1,954:53 while ranking 33rd in save percentage (.853) and 37th in goals against average (.691)
- The MSU defense ranks 32nd in the country in goals against average (.691) and 47th in shutout percentage (.476) with the 10 shutouts tying for the second most in a single-season in school history
 
MUSTANGS GARNER SEVEN ALL-LSC HONORS; FIVE NAMED FIRST TEAM
- Midwestern State collected seven all-Lone Star Conference selections with a league-best five players earning first team honors last week
- Courtney Burnette, Nicole Coetzer, Imani Morlock, Liz Navarette and Destinee Williamson were named to the All-LSC First Team while Lauren Fambrough and Hanna Mattinson were second team picks
- Mattinson was also tabbed the LSC Freshman of the Year

MSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
- Midwestern State is 1-3 in its three previous NCAA Tournament appearances, making postseason showings in 2010, 2011 and 2013
- The Mustangs picked up their lone NCAA win on Nov. 11, 2011 with a 1-0 victory over St. Edward's in the opening round of the South Central Regional before falling to No. 17 Abilene Christian in the next round with a 2-1 overtime loss in Abilene
- MSU dropped a 3-1 decision to Truman State (Mo.) in its first NCAA Tournament contest on Nov. 12, 2010
- The Mustangs suffered their second overtime defeat in NCAA Tournament play in their last postseason appearance in 2013 with a 2-1 defeat to Metro State (Colo.) on Nov. 15 in Golden, Colo.
 
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS 
- St. Edward's is 15-1-2 entering NCAA Tournament play, winning the Heartland Conference regular season title before falling to No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist in the conference tournament championship, 5-4 in penalty kicks
- The Hilltoppers carry a 15-game unbeaten streak into the postseason with their lone loss of the season coming to Texas A&M-Commerce back on Sept. 11 in a 2-1 overtime defeat at Lion Soccer Field
- SEU ranks 11th nationally with 2.83 goals per game, ranking in the top 15 in the country in total points (148), goals (51) and assists (46)
- The Hilltoppers also rank high on the defensive end at 12th in the nation with a .435 goals against average and 21st with a .611 shutout percentage with 11 clean sheets this season
- Senior forward Jennifer Boudreau leads the Hilltoppers with 25 points, tallying 10 goals and five assists
- SEU sports a balanced offensive attack with six players recording at least five goals on the year
- Junior forward Kelly Andrus ranks second for the Hilltoppers with seven goals and 18 points while Sydney Mack has added six scores
- Freshman forward Toni Tewes, freshman midfielder India Wentz and junior midfielder Whytneigh Duffie have each added five goals with Wentz matching Boudreau with four game winners
- In goal, senior Lorrie Santoy has made all 18 starts for the Hilltoppers, allowing just seven goals this season with a 0.43 goals against average and .759 save percentage

INSIDE THE SERIES 
- St. Edward's holds a narrow 7-6-2 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1995
- The two teams squared off every season from 1995-2006 but have met just three times on the pitch in the last 10 years
- Midwestern State has won the last two meetings, defeating the Hilltoppers in a regular season meeting in Austin in 2014 while eliminating them from the 2011 postseason
- The series is tied 1-1 in neutral site contests with SEU taking a win over MSU in Edmond in 2010 and the Mustangs earning their lone NCAA win over the Hilltoppers in Abilene in 2011
