Mustangs host Central Oklahoma to close out homestand

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State closes out a three-game homestand on Sunday afternoon as it hosts Central Oklahoma and looks to extend a 22-game home unbeaten streak.

The Mustangs dominated the second half on Thursday night and defeated Colorado Mesa, 2-0. Izzy Amphlett scored her first goal in the 68th minute, assisted by Ella Adams and Lexi Gonzales. Gonzales recorded her third assist of the season  as Madison Brinkley scored her 10th career goal for the Mustangs. Morgan Countryman also assisted on the second goal for MSU in the 74th minute.

Midwestern State (3-0-0) outshot Colorado Mesa 12-4 in the second half and finished with a 16-6 advantage, including six shots on goal. The Mustangs held the Mavericks to three shots on goal and extended their streak of allowing five or fewer shots on goal to 22 games.

Gonzalez is leading the Mustangs with five points, and Bella Pillow has scored a team leading two goals for Midwestern State, which has a plus-9 goal differential through three games. Eight different players have scored at least one goal for the Mustangs, and seven players have at least one assist.

Goalkeeper Lauren Short has not conceded a goal in 270 minutes, and the sophomore from Frisco, Texas, has made four saves this season, including three on Thursday night against Colorado Mesa.

Midwestern State is unbeaten in its last three meetings with Central Oklahoma, including a 2-2 draw in Edmond, Oklahoma, last season. Marlene Myrvold gave MSU a 2-1 lead at Tom Thompson Field with a goal in the 71st minute. Brinkley assisted on the Nyxalee Munoz goal in the 17th minute that gave the Stangs a short-lived  1-0 advantage, but UCO earned the draw in the 82nd minute, when Caleah Carter scored for the Bronchos. Rebekah George had a goal and an assist for Central Oklahoma.

The Bronchos lead the all-time series 18-7-2 and have won five of their 11 visits to Stang Park, but lost their last game in Wichita Falls two years ago, 3-1.

Sophia Gaskins scored the game-winning goal with two seconds remaining, and Central Oklahoma (1-2-0) earned its first win of the season on Friday night with a 2-1 triumph at Oklahoma Baptist, which lost to Midwestern State on opening night 5-1.

THe Bronchos opened the season with a 2-1 loss to No. 15-ranked Minnesota State and fell to Augustana last week, 2-0.

Gaskins has two goals in three games and leads the Bronchos with four points through three matches. Emma Nicholas has the only other goal for UCO, which has been outscored 5-3 in its first three games.

Midwestern State opens conference play on Wednesday night at UT Permian Basin and returns to Stang Park on Sept. 12 to play Eastern New Mexico at 4 p.m.
