WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 16 Midwestern State breezed to its third win of the season lapping the field in the MSU Cross Country Carnival at Hawk Ridge Golf Course.
The Mustangs fell three points shy of a perfect score closing the 6K event with 18 points well ahead of Lone Star Conference foes Central Oklahoma (62), West Texas A&M (68), Tarleton State (99) and Southwestern Oklahoma (113) who finished in succession from second to sixth.
"The course was very touch, so we wanted a good, solid effort," MSU coach
Koby Styles. "We wanted to get the win so now we can start focusing on conference and regionals."
Junior
Brissia Montalvo, a transfer from El Paso Community College, claimed her first win at MSU by recording the ninth best time in school history at 22:54.00 and was followed closely by senior
Sydnee Cole, who covered the course in 23:05.40.
Central Oklahoma's Alina Istrate broke up the bid for perfection finishing third with a time 23:19.00, but was followed closely by a trio of Mustang freshmen as
Ashley Flores (23:39.20),
Janel Campbell (23:41.60) and
Cara Mack (23:58.00) at fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The Mustangs were able to close their gap time from the top finisher to fifth to 63 seconds.
"I was very pleased with our performance today," Styles said. "We've got a solid front group, but it will come down to the best fifth when we get to the postseason. If we continue like we did today, we'll be fine."
Junior
Lindsey Pate, who missed the last two meets, returned to action to finish 11th with a time of 24:41.90 while sophomore
Heather Owens was 16th with a time of 25:10.30.
The Mustangs compete in the East Central Tiger Chase next Saturday in Ada, Okla.
