Cross Country Turns In 10th Place Finish at South Central Region Championship

The top-10 finish is the first for the program since 2016.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Midwestern State Cross Country posted a top-10 team finish at the NCAA South Central Regional, held in Pueblo, Colo. at Walking Stick Golf Course on Saturday morning. MSU placed in 10th, led by lead runners Ella Pando and Jadyn Dangerfield, who finished 39th and 40th, respectively.

The Mustangs took 10th place in a field of 26 programs, with over 170 racers in the field. The Mustangs team finish inside the top-10 is the first for the program since 2016, when the Maroon & Gold grabbed a 9th place finish. MSU totaled 299 points in team scoring, finishing as the second best team in the Lone Star Conference team competing. Regional champions, Adams State, finished with a team score of 42 points, followed by UCCS (74), Colo. School of Mines (82), Western Colorado (111), and West Texas A&M (192). Adams State, UCCS, and Colo. School of Mines all earn automatic bids to the NCAA DII National Championship meet in two weeks' time, held in Kenosha, Wis.  

Pando and Dangerfield were the top finisher's for the Mustangs, finishing just behind each other. Pando clocked 22:07.9 in the 6K race, hosted at 4,692 feet of elevation. Dangerfield crossed the finish line just three seconds after Pando, with an official time of 22:10.1. Freshman Konnar McClendon was the third Mustangs for finish, placing 69th, with a time of 22:49.2.

The next three Mustangs all finished within one second of each other, with Rosalene Reyes Perez taking 75th with a mark of 23:01.8. Just behind, Perla Flores crossed the line with a time of 23:02.4. Half a step behind Flores, Grace Pineda finished a tenth of a second after her teammates, taking 78th with a time of 23:02.5. Lula Nolen rounded out the MSU competitors with a finish of 106th, with a time of 23:46.8.

The Mustangs now wait to see if they advance to the NCAA DII National Championship Meet, as an at-large selection. The release of the full field of competing teams and individual runners will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10 on NCAA.com.
