Mustangs rattle St. Mary’s, 83-72

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State placed five players in double figures as the Mustangs rolled ot an 83-72 win over St. Mary's (Texas) in the home opener Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The win was the 14th-straight at home for MSU which hasn't lost since dropping the season opener to Dallas Baptist last season.

The Mustangs (3-0) shot 61.1 percent from the field, but it was a swarming defense which provided the difference against St. Mary's.

The Rattlers were able to shoot a more than respectable 53.6 percent from the field, but MSU rattled them into 23 turnovers and blocked 10 shots led by senior forward Rashad Austin, who had a season-high five.

The Mustangs held a 30-11 edge in points off turnovers which also included a 34-4 edge in fast-break points.

MSU used a 12-2 run midway through the first half after St. Mary's redshirt-freshman Kevin Kotzur dropped in a layup at the 15:46 mark to pull the Rattlers within 11-9.

MSU senior guard Jason Ebie started the rally with a traditional three-point play then hit a jumper before the Mustangs got off an running four-straight layups and led 23-11 when Adrian Van Buren converted Michael Godwin's steal  with 10:43 to go.

Midwestern expanded the lead to 40-25 at halftime and led by as many as 24 in the second half before the St. Mary's cut the bulge back to 12 during trash time.

Senior guard Anthony Moore paced the Mustangs with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting including a pair of 3-pointer in just 16 minutes of floor time, while senior guard Craig Green added 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

Ebie closed with out with 12 points, seven assists and five steals, while Van Buren dropped in 12 points, four assists and a pair of steal off of the bench.

Junior forward Charlie Logan added 13 points and had three blocks off of the bench.

Senior forward Rashad Austin had eight points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots in 22 minutes, while fellow starter Chris Hagan had six points, six assists and five steals.

St. Mary's (1-1) was paced by Kotzur, who had a game-high 20 points.

Midwestern State faces Newman (Kan.) Saturday night in Wichita. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
