WICHITA, Kan. - Chris Hagan and
Craig Green dropped in a game-high 17 points each to lead Midwestern State to a 72-65 win over Newman (Kan.) Saturday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003-04, open the River City Classic Friday afternoon against Langston (Okla.) at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
Newman used a 13-2 run early in the game to surge to an 18-6 when Justin Berry converted a layup at the 13:50 mark of the first half.
"They jumped on us with some 3s and got some baskets in transition," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said.
That's when the Mustangs turned up the pressure and started chipping away at the lead.
Senior forward
Rashad Austin got the putback on Green missed layup to ignite a 7-0 run which allowed the Mustangs to trim a 10-point Jets advantage to 20-17 after Green canned a 3-pointer and
Jason Ebie hit a jumper with 7:49 to go in the first half.
"We just started getting stops," McCasland said. "The ball pressure started to catch up with their run."
The Mustangs pulled in front on a pair of Austin free throws to lead 23-22 with 3:43 to go in the first half and would lead 33-30 at intermission - a lead they would never relinquish.
MSU would lead by as many as 12 points in the second half, but Newman still exposed some chinks in the Mustangs' armor.
"We got out-hustled," McCasland said. "We had guys step up and make plays when we we needed to. We just didn't get to that many loose balls and that's got to change."
Newman dropped to 2-1 on the season.
