WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State placed four golfers in the top 14 as the Mustangs finished strong with a runner-up showing in the MSU Invitational Tuesday at the Par-72, 6,077-yard Champions Course.

"It was a good golf tournament and our girls played really well," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "Hopefully we can build off of this."

Freshman Lindsay Burkhart polished off a two-round total of 158 (+14) as MSU's top overall individual finish at fourth as the freshman from Grapevine closed four strokes behind the tourament top individual Erica Bensch of Cantral Oklahoma.

But it was Taylor Klutts, who paced MSU with a final round 78 (+6), who allowed the Mustangs to hold on for a second-place finish with a two round team total of 643 (+67).

It wasn't enough to fend off West Texas A&M which used a final round 311 to make the move from fourth to claim the team tital with a two-round 635 (+59).

Junior Kyla Whittley logged rounds of 79 and 81 for a total of 160 (+16) good for a seventh-place showing, while freshman sister Kendra Whittley matched Klutts with a 164 (+20) to tie for 14th.

Freshman Megan Richardson tallied a pair of 83s to finish 20th with a total of 166 (+22).

Freshman Lauren Romines tied for 22nd (84-83, 167) and sophomore Kari Goen tied for 49th (88-89, 177) while competing as individual medalists.

"(Champions Course superintendent) Tony Dody did an outstanding job running the tournament," Ray said. "The Champions staff was simply phenomenal."

Midwestern State competes in the California State-Monterey Bay Invitational next week at the Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
