Men's tennis has a busy Easter Weekend with three dual matches

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 19 Midwestern State has a hectic three days coming up. The Mustangs host Lubbock Christian in the conference opener, travel to Waco for an exhibition with Baylor, return home for a conference dual with UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon.

Lubbock Christian visits MSU Tennis Center on Friday at 10 a.m. The Mustangs meet Baylor at Hurd Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. UT Permian Basin visits Midwestern State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (8-3) has won its last four regulation dual matches. However, Tyler Junior College defeated the Mustangs in an exhibition last week, 5-2, at JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.

The Mustangs are 33-24 in singles matches this season. Germano Setti leads the team with a 7-2 record at No. 1 singles. 

Setti won a hard-fought three set match against Jaime Paquet of Hawaii Hilo in his last appearance at MSU Tennis Center, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9).

Bruno Sanchez is 4-4 at No. 2 singles following a 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 loss to Max Solano of Hawaii Hilo.

Jose Marquez had a four-match winning streak snapped with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 2-6 loss to Angel Fonseca of Hawaii Hilo and is 4-2 at No. 3 singles.

Juan David Duque has a four-match winning streak and is 5-1 at No. 4 singles after defeating Filippo Di Perna of Hawaii Hilo, 6-2, 6-0.

Matthew Earle has seen most of the action at No. 5 singles, where he is 3-3 after a 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 4-6 loss to Iori Furuhata of Hawaii Hilo.

Tomas Leguizamon pulled out a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Sergi Tinore of Hawaii Hilo and improved his record at No. 6 singles to 2-3. The Mustangs are 3-6 as a team in the No. 6 position.

Midwestern State is 19-13 in doubles, and the Mustangs have won the doubles point in six of their 11 duals this season. 

Setti and Earle have been stalwarts at No. 2 doubles, boasting an eight-match winning streak and a 9-1 record this season.

Sanchez and Cesar Loeches Llamas are 3-1 with back-to-back victories at No. 1 doubles after defeating Angel Fonseca and Jaden Williams of Hawaii Hilo, 6-3.

The Mustangs are 4-7 at No. 3 doubles this season. Duque and Marquez have alternated wins and losses in the last four duals and fell to Furuhata and Solano of Hawaii Hilo, 6-2.

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (13-5, 3-0)

Midwestern State is 6-2 all-time against Lubbock Christian, but the Chaparrals have won the last two meetings. LCU defeated MSU 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament final last spring. The Chaparrals also won the regular season dual in Lubbock last year, 4-3.

Lubbock Christian won its dual match at Cameron on Friday, 6-1, winning all six singles matches.

Kelly Giese is ranked No. 5 in the nation and leads Lubbock Christian. Giese is 15-1 in dual matches at No. 1 singles and has a 13-match winning streak. 

Giese had a five-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles end with a loss at Cameron and is 12-5 this season, playing alongside Mattia Ghedin. The Chaparrals have won the doubles' point in 14 of 18 duals this season.

BAYLOR (16-7, 3-1)

Midwestern State will meet the Division I program from the Big 12 Conference for the fourth time in the history of MSU tennis. All three duals have been in Waco, where the Mustangs last visited in 2022 and lost 7-0. Baylor is 3-0 when facing MSU.

Baylor is 11-1 at home this season and has a four-dual winning streak after defeating Creighton, 7-0, at Hurd Tennis Center. 

Baylor is 68-33 in singles matches and 32-22 in doubles matches this season.  Baylor won the doubles' point in 13 of its 23 dual matches this season.

UT PERMIAN BASIN (4-9, 1-1)

Midwestern State is 13-2 in the all-time series with MSU, but the two losses have come in the last two meetings, including a 5-2 loss in Odessa last year. Midwestern State is 5-1 when hosting the Falcons but lost 4-3 when UTPB last visited the MSU Tennis Center for the 2024 NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

UT Permian Basin is coming off a 7-0 loss to UT Tyler at Summers Tennis Center in Tyler.  The Falcons are 24-43 in singles matches this season and only have a winning record at No. 2 singles, where they are 5-4 this season.

The Falcons are 16-21 in doubles matches, including a 3-3 record in conference play. No. 3 doubles is 6-5 for UTPB, which has won the doubles' point in four of 13 duals this season.

Midwestern State meets UT Dallas at UTD Tennis Complex for a dual match on April 10.
