Red River Rivalry renewed before Mustangs tangle with Rattlers

LAWTON, Oklahoma – No. 21-ranked Midwestern State is on the road for two more dual matches this week, renewing the Red River Rivalry with Cameron on Friday at 1 p.m. before visiting St. Mary's in San Antonio, where first serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Midwestern State (10-5, 2-2) is 2-3 in away duals this season following a 4-3 loss at UT Tyler on Sunday, when all six singles matches went the distance.

UT Tyler clinched the dual-match victory with Daniil Felker holding off Matthew Earle at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Earle is 1-2 in conference matches and fell to 4-6 for the campaign.

Tomas Leguizamon rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jordi Garcia at No. 6 singles to knot the dual match, 3-3. Leguizamon improved to 3-1 in conference play and is 5-4 overall.

Juan David Duque and Bruno Sanchez, ranked No. 17 among doubles pairings in NCAA Division II, secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-3 win over 13th-ranked Felker and Carel Wessel at No. 1 doubles. Duque and Sanchez posted their third straight win and improved to 6-5 this season.

Germano Setti and Matthew Earle blitzed No. 36-ranked Malo Poulesquen and Artiom Dorofeev 6-1 for their 12th consecutive win at No. 2 doubles, and the No. 44-ranked duo from MSU is 13-1 in dual matches.

Samuel Antwi and Trevor Short of UT Tyler upended Jack Franklin and Jose Marquez 6-3 moments after the Mustangs won the match at No. 2 doubles. Franklin and Marquez are 1-1 at No. 3 doubles for Midwestern State.

Setti, ranked No. 18 in singles, won his third consecutive match and improved to 10-3 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over No. 35-ranked Dorofeev at No. 1 singles.

No. 10-ranked Antwi extended his winning streak at singles to 19 matches and remained undefeated this season after surviving a challenge from No. 53-ranked Marquez at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Marquez had a three-match winning streak halted and fell to 10-4 this spring.

Duque started strong at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs, but No. 20-ranked Poulesquen rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over the senior from Colombia, who won five of his previous six singles matches. Duque is 8-6 this season.

Sanchez, ranked No. 52 in singles, was in a tightly contested match at No. 2 singles against No. 61 ranked Wessels of UT Tyler, who won the final two games of the third set to pull out a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory. Sanchez had a three-match winning streak snapped and lost his first match against a conference foe this season. Sanchez is 9-5 in singles.

Midwestern State is winning more than 60 percent of its singles matches this season with a 49-32 record. The Mustangs won the doubles point in six of their last eight duals, and have earned the opening point in nine dual matches this season.

Cameron is led by No. 6-ranked Lukas Janousek, who has a three-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles and is 10-3 this season.

The Aggies are 42-30 in singles matches this season, but they are 14-16 against conference competition.
