MSU on the road for the first of three dual matches in three days

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State Is scheduled to play three dual matches in three days. The Mustangs travel to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on Thursday to play the Riverhawks at 2 p.m. On Friday, Harding visits the MSU Tennis Center for a dual match that begins at 9 a.m., and McKendree tangles with the home-standing Stangs on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Midwestern State (4-3) won two of three dual matches in the Lone Star Conference/Gulf South Conference crossover event in Tyler, Texas,

No. 26-ranked Midwestern State defeated West Alabama, 5-2, and Auburn Montgomery, 4-3, before suffering a 6-1 loss to No. 2-ranked West Florida in the finale on March 1.

No. 7-ranked German Setti had a five-match winning streak snapped at No. 1 singles with a 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 3-6 loss to Sebastian Rondon of the Argonauts. It was the first three-set loss for the No. 7-ranked Setti, who defeated Gabriel Garay of West Alabama and former teammate Killian Guilloou of Rockhurst in three-set matches earlier this season. Setti also won a match tiebreak against Ivan Melnik of Nebraska Kearney and is 5-1 this season.

Setti and Matthew Earle have reeled off five consecutive wins at No. 2 doubles, including a 6-2 win over Mark Neyelov and Samuel Vidales of West Florida. Setti/Earle is 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and has not conceded more than three games since a 6-3 loss to Melnik and Andy Brisdon of Nebraska Kearney.

The Mustangs have claimed the doubles point in three of their seven duals this season, sweeping West Alabama to earn the doubles point in its victory on Feb. 27.

Juan David Duque and Bruno Sanchez have both played No. 2 doubles and combined for a 3-3 record. Sanchez has played the No. 2 position in the last five dual matches with one unfinished match against Tommy Cecchetti of No. 4-ranked Washburn. Sanchez won back-to-back three-set matches against West Alabama and Alabama Montgomery before No. 2-ranked Diego Duran posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory for West Florida.

Sanchez won his first two matches playing No. 3 singles, and the Mustangs are 4-3 this season at the position. 

Sanchez and Duque have played No. 1 doubles in all seven duals this season and have posted a 3-4 record for the Mustangs.

Jose Marquez was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over No. 19-ranked Rafael Sabio of West Florida at No. 3 singles and improved his overall record to 4-3 with a 1-1 mark at No. 3 singles.

Marquez is 3-2 at No. 4 singles, and the Mustangs are 4-3 as a team at the position. Duque defeated Raphael Pertusier of Auburn Montgomery, 6-3, 7-5, in his first match at the No. 4 spot this season.

Earle has both wins for MSU at No. 5 singles, winning matches against West Alabama and AUM last weekend. 

Cesar Loeches Llamas of Spain has the only win for the Mustangs at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Sebastiao Vilas of West Alabama.

Loeches Llamas and Marquez are manning No. 3 doubles and scored a 7-5 victory against West Alabama last week.

NORTHEASTERN STATE


Midwestern State is 2-2 in its four previous encounters with Northeastern State, but the two programs have not met since MSU posted a 5-2 victory in 2000 at Edmond, Oklahoma.  Midwestern State is making its first trip to Tahlequah since 1997.

Northeastern State is 3-3 this season with wins over UT Permian Basin (4-3) and UT Dallas (6-1) of the Lone Star Conference. The Riverhawks are coming off a 5-2 loss at home to North Dakota on Sunday. 

Sophomore James Edley is 3-3 at No. 1 singles, and Alexander Edley is 3-2 at No. 2 singles. The Riverhawks are 18-20 over in singles matches with a 4-2 record at No. 3 singles, led by Mansur Khajimuradov. The team is a combined 6-12 at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles combined.

Khajimuradov and Alexander Edley are 4-2 at No. 1 doubles, but the Riverhawks are just 8-8 in doubles this season, however James Edley and Luis Denda have won three-straight double matches, including a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Raphael Alvado and Theo Braun of Oklahoma Wesleyan. 
 

HARDING


Juan David Duque and Jose Marquez won three-set matches in singles as Midwestern State pulled out a 4-3 Valentine's Day victory against Harding at Greenwood Tennis Center last year, and the all-time series is tied, 2-2.

Harding is No. 31 in the ITA National Collegiate Tennis Rankings and is coming off one its most dominant performances in recent program history.

Harding defeated William Jewell 7-0 on Sunday for its third consecutive dual-match victory and improved to 8-2 for the season with a 5-1 road record. The Bisons only three games in singles with No. 35-ranked Adrian Solorzano winning via walkover at No. 1 singles. 

Solorzano and Cian Mikkelsen are No. 3 in the ITA Doubles rankings, and the Bisons are 21-9 in doubles matches this season. Harding won the doubles point in nine of its 10 duals this season with the only loss coming against Lubbock Christian, which won the dual match 6-1.

In other dual matches against LSC oppoents, No. 5-ranked UT Tyler defeated the Bisons, 6-1, but Harding breezed past UT Permian, 7-0.
 

McKENDREE


McKendree won its only previous meeting with the Mustangs, cruising to a 5-2 victory at MSU Tennis Center in 2024. Germano Setti lost a three-set match as a sophomore to Sebastian Holden at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1. Current head coach Luis Diaz suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Leonardo Frederico at No. 1 singles. Setti, Diaz, and Bruno Sanchez helped the Mustangs sweep doubles to win the first point of the dual match.

McKendree defeated Quincy, 6-1, and improved to 5-6 for the season but plays Cameron and UT Dallas before meeting the Mustangs on Saturday. 

Stephen Mach lost six of seven matches at No. 1 singles after falling to Inigo Villacampa of Quincy, 1-6, 5-7. Bendix Schroeder ended a three-match slide at No. 2 singles with back-to-back straight-set wins over Purdue Northwest and Quincy.

Schroeder and Ignacio Paolini won three of four matches at No. 1 doubles after defeating Villacampa and Davd Eusamio of Quincy, 7-6 (5), helping the Bearcats sweep the doubles.
