Competition in Tyler will not be a bed of roses

TYLER, Texas – No. 24-ranked Midwestern State is facing three opponents from the Gulf South Conference in the "Rose City" this weekend. The Mustangs face West Alabama on Friday, Auburn Montgomery on Saturday and No. 2-ranked West Florida on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. on all three days.

Midwestern State (2-2) is coming off a 1-2 road trip last week, defeating Rockhurst in between losses to Nebraska Kearney and No. 4-ranked Washburn. 

The Mustangs are led by No. 7-ranked Germano Setti, who won both of his completed matches at No. 1 singles last week and improved to 3-0 in the dual-match season. Setti and Matthew Earle are a formidable pairing at No. 2 doubles, opening the season with a 3-1 record. The only loss for the Mustangs' No-16-ranked duo came to Ivan Melnik and Andy Brisdon of Nebraska Kearney.

Jose Marquez has started the season with a 3-1 record in singles. The senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, has played all four matches at No. 4 singles. Marquez is coming off his first loss of the season. Zino Nahirniak of Washburn defeated Marquez on Sunday in Topeka, 6-4, 6-2. Marquez won his first three-set match of the season, clinching the dual-match victory over Rockhurst with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Alex Khamartou.

Bruno Sanchez won his first two matches of the season at No. 3 singles and made his first appearance at No. 2 singles in the 4-1 victory over Rockhurst. Sanchez went three sets before falling to Alex Tikhonov of the Hawks, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6. Sanchez played No. 2 singles at Washburn and led Tommy Cecchetti, 2-6, 6-1, 3-1 when the Ichabods clinched the dual-match victory. 

Juan David Duque has played twice at No. 2 singles and twice at No. 3 singles. He is 2-2 with victories in both positions. The No. 33-ranked Duque lost to No. 35 Andy Brisdon of Nebraska Kearney 1-6, 4-6 at No. 2 singles before defeating Oliver Dickason of Rockhurst at No. 3 singles last weekend.

Duque and Sanchez are ranked No. 11 in doubles, and the duo is 2-2 at No. 1 doubles for the Mustangs, earning wins against Nebraska Kearney and Rockhurst before Cecchetti and Kilian Martinez scored a 6-3 victory for Washburn.

Midwestern State is still seeking it first wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and the Mustangs have dropped No. 3 doubles in each of their last three duals.

WEST ALABAMA (3-0) 


Midwestern State is 2-0 against West Alabama with both victories coming at Tyler in the last two years. The Mustangs prevailed last year, 4-2, after scoring a 6-1 victory in 2024.

The Tigers earned their third straight win to start the season with a 5-2 victory over William Carey (Miss.) in their most recent dual match on Feb. 17. 
West Alabama is undefeated at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.

Gabriel Garay earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against William Carey's Artur Ibragimov. Garay is 3-0 for the Tigers with a win at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Jacob Tapia earned two wins at No. 1 singles before scoring a 6-2, 7-5 win over Islam Orynbassar at No. 2 singles against William Carey.
 
Federico Iturbe is unbeaten in three matches at No. 4 singles and has not dropped a set. Iturbe is 2-1 at No. 1 doubles playing alongside Tapia.

Itaru Kikuchi has reeled off three consecutive straight-set victories at No. 6 singles. He played No. 2 doubles against William Carey alongside Afonso Portugal and earned a 6-2 victory.

The Tigers are 7-2 in doubles during dual matches this season.

AUBURN MONTGOMERY (2-4)


Midwestern State is facing Auburn Montgomery in Tyler for the third straight year and won both of the previous encounters, 4-3.
 
Auburn Montgomery is playing Cameron on Friday before its dual match with the Mustangs on Saturday.

The Warhawks have three losses to ranked opponents this season, including a 4-1 loss to No. 9 Embry -Riddle on Monday in Columbus, Georgia.
 
Giuseppe Bonaiuti is 2-3 at No. 1 singles for the Warhawks this season, and he is 3-3 in doubles with two wins at No. 1 doubles alongside Jami Savolainen.
Savolainen is 3-3 at No. 2 singles and is coming off a 3-6, 3-6 loss to Enrico Rosellini of Embry-Riddle. 

The Warhawks are 11-22 in singles and 8-9 in doubles through their first six dual matches of the season. 

WEST FLORIDA (3-1) 


The Mustangs only win in eight previous encounters with the Argonauts came in San Antonio seven years ago, when the 17th-ranked Mustangs edged No. 4-ranked West Florida, 4-3.
The second-ranked Argonauts have a rematch with UT Tyler and face Cameron before battling the Mustangs on Sunday morning. 

West Florida won two of three matches at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, including a 4-1 victory over UT Tyler. The Argonauts also knocked off No. 3-ranked Flagler, 4-2, before top-ranked Barry swept its way to a 4-0 victory over West Florida.

Sebastian Rondon is 3-1 at No. 1 singles for the Argonauts with his only loss coming to Riccardo Trione of Barry, 4-6, 6-7. Rondon defeated Aniss Rafiq of Flagler, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (9), 6-3.

Diego Duran has posted a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles with all three victories coming in straight sets, including two wins over nationally ranked foes. Duran and Rondon are 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Argonauts.

West Florida is 12-6 overall in singles and boasts a 6-3 record in doubles.

Midwestern State travels to Durant, Oklahoma, for a dual match with Southeastern Oklahoma State on March 6.
