TYLER, Texas – Selin Sepken earned an automatic berth in the ITA Cup after two more victories at the ITA DII Women's South Central Regional Championships on Saturday, and she will be joined by her teammates
Emilia Gyorgy and
Camila Garcia, who earned the automatic bid in doubles.
Sepken, the No. 10 seed in the 64-player singles draw, started the day with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over AnaMaria Zoric of Lubbock Christian in the semifinals.
In the finals, Sepken faced third-seed Margaux Rene of Angelo State, who had not dropped a set during the tournament and thumped top-seeded Yona Bancarel of UT Tyler in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1.
It was Sepken who completed the tournament by winning all 12 sets she played, including a 6-0, 7-5 championship victory over Rene in the final match on Saturday.
Garcia and Gyorgy were equally impressive as the fourth-seeded doubles team waltzed past No. 8-seeded Gia Posito and Karol Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary's in the final. The Mustangs' duo survived a pro-set tiebreak with Maya Donkor and Lilly-Isabelle Muraske in the quarterfinals on Friday en route to the championship.
Hattie Berend, who had the misfortune of playing top-seeded Yona Bancarel of UT Tyler in the first round of singles, was eliminated in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, bowing out to Luisa Moraes of UT Tyler on Saturday, 6-1, 6-3.
The singles and doubles champions from each of the eight regional championships receive automatic bids to the ITA Cup, which is Oct. 16-19 at Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
