LAREDO, Texas – Midwestern State tangles with Texas A&M International in the conference opener on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Dustdevil Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Midwestern State was 0-1-2 through its non-conference schedule and is coming off a 2-2 draw with Central Oklahoma at Tom Thompson Soccer Field in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Nyxalee Munoz and
Marlene Myrvold scored goals for the Mustangs, but Caleah Carter found the back of the net for the Bronchos in the 82nd minute to earn the draw for UCO.
Texas A&M International improved to 1-1-1 with a 1-0 victory over Texas Lutheran in its home opener last week. Janize Castillo scored the first and only goal of the season for the Dustdevils, who were shut out in two matches to start the campaign.
TAMIU played Lynn to a scoreless draw in Boca Raton, Florida, on Sept. 4 and fell 2-0 to Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, two days later.
The Mustangs have scored twice in all three matches this season and are tied for fifth in the Lone Star Conference with two goals per match, but MSU is conceding the second-most goals in the league at 2.3 goals allowed per match.
Myrvold leads the team with two goals. Munoz,
Madison Brinkley,
Abbey Lee and
Jasmine Montgomery have each scored once for the Mustangs, who have played all three matches on the road this season.
Freshman forward
Morgan Countryman leads the Mustangs with two assists. Brinkley and
Alinessa Salinas assisted on the two goals at Central Oklahoma.
Sloane Sullivan and
Mable Pruter have also recorded assists this season for the Mustangs.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Short started the first two games for Midwestern State and has a 2.50 goals-against average with a save percentage of .500. Sophomore goalkeeper
Tanner Sorenson got the nod at Central Oklahoma and made two saves in the 2-2 draw.
Midwestern State is unbeaten in its 10 previous encounters with Texas A&M International. After MSU won the first six confrontations, each of the last four meetings have resulted in a draw.
Last year,
Lexi Beck converted a penalty kick for MSU in the 58th minute at Dustdevil Soccer Field, but Krysan St. Louis scored the equalizer for TAMIU in the 79th minute. It was the third consecutive 1-1 draw in the series.
The Mustangs put seven of their 12 shots on goal, while the Dustdevils placed three of their 11 shots on frame.
Midwestern State is 4-0-2 when visiting TAMIU and 1-0-4 in conference matches against the Dustdevils.
MSU has outscored TAMIU in the all-time series 35-6 with five shutouts.
In Laredo, Midwestern State has outscored TAMIU 24-3 and posted two clean sheets.
TAMIU has scored multiple goals in a match against Midwestern State just once.
In 2021, Vivian Martinez and Irene Robles scored for the Dustdevils, who fell behind 1-0 in the second minute at Stang Park. Randi Heaton scored the first goal for MSU, but Martinez answered in the 13th minute. Kelly Cannistra reclaimed the lead for MSU with a goal in the 54th minute, but Robles scored the equalizer seven minutes later and the game finished in a 2-2 draw.
Junior goalkeeper Latae Rodriguez has allowed two goals in two starts for the Dustdevils, and she has a save percentage of .778.
Maria Melindez was the goalkeeper in a scoreless draw against Lynn, and she made one save in the match that was abandoned after 72 minutes due to inclement weather.
The Mustangs make their first regular season appearance at Stang Park on Saturday afternoon as they host LSC newcomer UT Dallas. Kickoff on Family Weekend is scheduled for 1 p.m.
