PORTALES, New Mexico -- No matter the metric, Midwestern State enjoyed its best performance at a Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.
The Mustangs amassed 65 points and finished fourth out of 11 teams. MSU improved 22 points over the previous high set last season, while placing behind three perennial powerhouses -- West Texas A&M (277.50), Angelo State (174), and Texas A&M-Kingsville (71).
MSU student-athletes combined to set 18 personal bests and improved 19 marks on all-time lists, while setting three school records. The Mustangs also reached NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks in four categories.
Senior
Nidhi Singh led MSU's strong contingent in the 800-meter run, setting a school outdoor record, while earning the silver medal with a 2:07.01. Freshman
Maggie Neal finished fourth with a PR time of 2:11.76, while junior
Jadyn Dangerfield finished sixth with a time of 2:13.39.
A trio of Mustangs made history as the program had three runners in the 100-meter dash score points.
Senior
Corinne Thorpe improved her school record to 11.97 to place fifth, just ahead of freshman
Hailee Janzen (12.11/6th) and sophomore
Karissa Nixon (12.12/7th).
Junior
Trell'Kyrah Watkins struck bronze in the 400-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:00.60, while also improving her school record.
MSU sprinters also earned a bronze in the 4x400-meter relay with
Jessie Heath, Watkins, Neal, and Singh combining for a provisional qualifying time of 3:44.93 -- just a tick off of their own school record mark.
The Mustangs would have even more points if not for a bad exchange on the third exchange that led to a disqualification in the 4x100-meter relay.
MSU sprinters enjoyed a banner season, putting up the top three times in the 100-meter dash, the top two in the 100-meter hurdles, five of the top six in the 200-meter dash, two of the top three in the 400-meter dash, and three of the top four in the 400-meter hurdles.
Junior
Ella Pando earned points in two events, including a bronze-medal showing with a time of 37:16.63 in the 10,000-meter run, while placing sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:04.44.
Junior
Rosalene Reyes Perez finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:40.16), and was seventh in the 10,000-meter run (38:44.01).
Dangerfield also captured a seventh-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:44.75), just ahead of sophomore
Jaycee Lyons (4:45.42), while junior
Mariana Sanchez earned points with a seventh-place showing the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:00.55.
Freshman
Kennedy Johnson won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet and 8 inches. The mark was the third-best in program history and an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier.
Senior
Delaini Hanna earned a point with an eighth-place showing in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 1/4 inches.
