WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- – No. 24-ranked Midwestern State looks to remain perfect at home this season but must contend with No. 9-ranked UT Tyler in a dual match that gets underway at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Dallas Baptist visits MSU Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on Friday.
The Mustangs are 11-4 overall this season with a 3-2 record against Lone Star Conference opponents. Midwestern State has won all five duals contested on home soil.
It's been a month since the Mustangs last hosted a dual match. Midwestern State edged Cameron, 4-3, on March 18 and has gone 2-2 on the road since then. Midwestern State is coming off a 6-1 victory at Western New Mexico on Saturday after sweeping Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas, 7-0.
The competition is much tougher with UT Tyler visiting the Mustangs.
The Patriots are 17-1 overall with a 4-0 record in the LSC. UT Tyler is playing its third true road dual of the season with wins at No. 22 Southern Arkansas and No. 20 Emporia State last month.
The Patriots have hosted their first four duals in the LSC and only dropped two points. The Patriots swept Western New Mexico, Sul Ross State and Dallas Baptist. No. 37-ranked St. Mary's won two singles matches against the Patriots last week.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with UT Tyler, 7-6, but the Patriots have won four of the last five meetings, including a 4-3 victory in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship last year.
The Mustangs scored a 5-2 victory over UT Tyler at MSU Tennis Center last spring.
Stephen Slocombe clinched the win for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Daniil Felker at No. 3 singles.
Slocombe has been a hot hand for the Mustangs this season. The senior from Barbados has won eight consecutive singles matches and is 4-0 in conference matches. Slocombe is 9-3 overall this season with eight wins coming in the No. 3 position.
Slocombe and
Filip Vacula are the No. 15-ranked doubles in the nation, and they have won seven of their last nine matches at No. 1 doubles for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State has won the doubles point in seven of its last eight duals and is 4-1 against conference opponents.
Vacula, a freshman from Czechia, has won six of his last eight singles matches in the No. 1 spot for the Mustangs. Vacula, ranked No. 13 among NCAA Division II singles players, is 5-2 when facing other nationally ranked opponents this season.
Bruno Sanchez is establishing himself as one of the top players in the conference. The sophomore from Spain is No. 24 in the ITA singles rankings and has won his last four matches at No. 2 singles in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 18-ranked Pablo Segura of Lubbock Christian. Sanchez is 3-3 against nationally ranked foes this spring.
Sanchez and
Justin Van Amerongen are ranked No. 42 in doubles this season and are 4-1 in conference duals, playing primarily in the No. 2 slot.
Killian Guillou returned to the singles lineup for Midwestern State after missing more than a month. Guillou won both of his matches last week, extending his winning to three matches. The junior from France is 4-1 this season and all four wins have come in straight sets.
Guillou is paired with
Juan David Duque in doubles, and the tandem is 6-2 this season.
Duque won five of his first singles matches this season but lost a three-setter at Lubbock Christian and fell 3-6, 3-6, to Kristian Kubik of Cameron in the Mustangs' last dual match at MSU Tennis Center.
Jose Marquez, a junior from Oaxaca, Mexico, has won five of his last seven singles matches for the Mustangs, and he is 3-0 at home this season. Marquez has been alternating between No. 4 and No. 5 singles over the past month.
Midwestern State is 53-32 (.624) in singles matches this season, and 25-18 (.581) in doubles.
UT Tyler is 44-12 (.786) in singles matches this season and 24-6 (.800) in doubles.
Carl Wessel is ranked No. 5 in the nation among NCAA Division II singles players but has not played since March 18. Slocombe upended Wessel, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3 singles in the LSC Men's Championship last spring.
Artiom Dorofeev, a freshman from France, has reeled off 15 consecutive singles wins for the Patriots and has won his last four singles matches in straight sets. Dorofeev is ranked No. 33 in NCAA Division II.
Daniil Felker has won 10 of his last 11 singles matches and is ranked No. 55 in the nation. Felker defeated Guillou at No. 4 singles in the LSC Men's Championship last year, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (6), 6-3.
Felker and Wessel are the No. 6-ranked pairing in doubles, and Dorofeev plays alongside Malo Poulesquen, the No. 39-ranked duo in the country.
Dallas Baptist visits Cameron on Thursday before visiting the Mustangs on Friday afternoon. The DBU Patriots are 14-6 overall this season with a 1-3 conference record.
Dallas Baptist enters the week with a three-dual losing streak. No. 37-ranked St. Mary's defeated the Patriots in their last outing, 6-1.
The Patriots are 75-37 (.670) in singles matches this season, and they are 39-20 (.661) in doubles.
Matthew Abbey, a senior from Coppell, Texas, started his collegiate career at Midwestern State and is 9-4 at No. 1 singles for Dallas Baptist.
Ricardo Carvajalino and Fabian Rosales lead the team with nine appearances at No. 1 doubles and are 4-5 with an 0-3 record against LSC opponents. DBU is 10-10 at No. 1 doubles, but 29-10 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles combined.
Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center on Tuesday for a non-conference dual match with Newman (Kansas). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
