Offense rules in Silver City as Western New Mexico sweeps doubleheader

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Midwestern State played two slugfest games at The Yard, but Western New Mexico swept the doubleheader. WNMU outhit MSU 16-12 in an 11-7 victory to start the day. In the nightcap, the Western Mustangs outhit Midwestern State 17-11 and held off an MSU rally for a 10-9 victory. 

GAME 1 | Western New Mexico 11, Midwestern State 7

Senior Camile Nunez put together a stellar showing at the plate, hitting two home runs, but Midwestern State fell to Western New Mexico, 11-7. 

Senior Zoe Isom (2-5) took the loss in the circle for Midwestern State (13-21, 10-15).

Nunez went 3-for-5 at the plate, blasting a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the second inning. The native of Madera, California, also led off the fourth inning with a double.

Junior Megan Ayala hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning for the MSU Mustangs, and. sophomore Sydney Linn went 2-for-2 with a double and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Western New Mexico scored five runs in the home half of the first inning before MSU came back to reclaim their advantage in the second inning. Midwestern State picked up two runs, including one on a solo homer off the bat of Nunez, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the MSU Mustangs. Midwestern State was unable to hold the lead, as Western New Mexico scored six times over the remaining five innings to grab the 11-7 win.

Sophomore Addison Lindemann (6-10) got the ball to start for Midwestern State (13-22, 10-16) and took the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mustangs were trailing 6-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Midwestern State's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of sophomore Emma Roach.

The Western New Mexico Mustangs expanded their lead to 9-5 before the Mustangs offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. Midwestern State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run homer from senior Camile Nunez, which brought the score to 9-8 in favor of the Western New Mexico Mustangs.

Western New Mexico built their lead to 10-8 before the Midwestern State offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 10-9 in the sixth. The Mustangs scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Roach. The Mustangs were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
