Gonzales slows down Greyhounds, Mustangs earn 8-6 victory at ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. – Sydney Gonzales earned her first win of the season as she pitched four scoreless relief innings, and Midwestern State won the second game of a doubleheader, 8-6, at Greyhound Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

Camile Nunez hit her team-leading eighth home run, and Madison Stewart hit her first homer of the campaign. Jaycee Yezak drove home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of the nightcap.

Eastern New Mexico hit two home runs in the opening game of the doubleheader to defeat the Mustangs, 3-1.

GAME 1 | Eastern New Mexico 3, Midwestern State 1

Despite picking up seven hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State lost to the Greyhounds 3-1.

Sophomore Addison Lindemann (6-11) started in the circle for Midwestern State (13-23, 10-17) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing four walks and striking out six.

Senior shortstop Camile Nunez went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored the Mustangs only run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mustangs were trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning when Lindemann hit a sacrifice fly to score Nunez. The Mustangs were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

» The Mustangs out-hit the Greyhounds at a 7-5 clip.

» Midwestern State pitchers limited Eastern New Mexico to just 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position.

» Nunez had her 11th multi-hit game of the season.

» All seven hits were singles for the Mustangs.

»Eastern New Mexico was led offensively by freshman Christina Meneses, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Alondra Vasquez also homered for the Greyhounds.

» Freshman Miranda Guillen led the Greyhounds pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.

GAME 2 | Midwestern State 8, Eastern New Mexico 6

Camile Nunez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, but Eastern New Mexico answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first and held the lead until the fifth inning.

Junior Sydney Gonzales (1-1) stymied the Greyhounds with four scoreless innings in the circle and earned the win as the Mustangs rallied with four runs over the final two innings.

Eight different Mustangs had hits in the win and seven different Mustangs scored runs with junior Madison Stewart scoring twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Myranda Jimenez delivered a single in the fifth inning and moved into scored after Megan Ayala singled to right, and the Greyhounds made a fielding error. Ayala scored on fielder's choice as Midwestern State tied ENMU, 6-6.

In the sixth inning, Emma Roach led off with a base hit and advanced on a wild pitch. After Madison Stewart walked, Jaycee Yezak came through with a pinch-hit RBI single. Stewart stole home as Jessika Roberts induced a throw from the catcher moving off of first base.

GAME NOTES

» Every Midwestern State starter reached base safely in the win.

» The Mustangs drew five walks from Eastern New Mexico pitching.

» Stewart led the Mustangs at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

» Eastern New Mexico was led offensively by senior Alondra Vasquez, who went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
