WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 1-ranked UT Tyler fell behind Midwestern State through the first two innings of the doubleheader on Sunday at Mustangs Park but eventually showed what makes the Patriots the top-ranked team in the nation. UT Tyler pulled away from the Mustangs with a relentless offense, and its sensational pitching kept the Mustangs at bay after a rollicking start. The Patriots swept the doubleheader, 13-4 and 7-0.
GAME 1 | No. 1 Texas-Tyler 13, Midwestern State 4
Senior Camile Nunez put together an outstanding outing at the plate Sunday, hitting two homers, but the Midwestern State Mustangs fell to the No. 1 Texas-Tyler Patriots 13-4.
Sophomore Kayleigh Bowers (1-4) worked 3 1/3 innings as the starting pitcher for Midwestern State (6-14, 3-8). Addison Lindemann three 2 2/3 inning in relief, and Shyanne Florence closed the game with one inning of work. Mustang pitchers issued seven walks, and all of the Patriot runs were earned on 10 hits.
JT Smith, Jordyn De Los Santos and Mia Campos all homered for the Patriots. Campos hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fourth inning for the Patriots, who fell behind the Mustangs 3-1 through two innings.
Midwestern State chased UT Tyler starting pitcher Primrose Aholeilei, pounding the Patriots' ace for three runs on six hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Nunez went 2-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore Addison Lindemann was 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning. Junior Megan Ayala also chipped in for the Mustangs, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Midwestern State scored two runs on solo shots from Nunez and Lindemann.
The Patriots failed to push any runs across before the Mustangs offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Midwestern State pushed across a run on Ayala's one-out RBI double, which brought the Mustangs lead to 3-1.
Midwestern State's lead had evaporated by the time the seventh inning arrived and turned into a 13-3 UT Tyler advantage, when the Mustangs cut that deficit to 13-4. The Mustangs picked up a run on Nunez's one-out solo home run off junior Kaylee Davis (4-0). The Mustangs were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
Davis worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Mustangs were held to two hits through the first six innings before Lindemann got the only extra-base hit of the game for MSU with a double in the seventh inning. Jessika Roberts also singled in the seventh as Midwestern State threatened, but Blanchard left three Mustangs stranded and threw a complete-game shutout.Â
Lindemann (3-6) worked 2 2/3 as the starting pitcher, allowing four runs on five hits before Zoe Isom took over in the circle for Midwestern State and threw the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one strike out and no walks. Midwestern State fell to 6-15 with a 3-9 record in the LSC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sam Schott drove home a run with an RBI single in the first inning.
Abbie Behe delivered a two-run single in the third inning. Taryn Barney also stroked an RBI single in the third inning as the Patriots established a 4-0 lead.
Ka'Lyn Watson and JT Smith drove in runs in the fourth and fifth innings. An MSU error allowed a run to score in the seventh inning.
