NORTH KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- No. 5-ranked Midwestern State begins its 2025 campaign on the road with dual matches against Rockhurst and No. 11-ranked Washburn.
Midwestern State begins the road trip with a 9 a.m. dual match at the Northland Racquet Club against Rockhurst on Friday morning. Saturday at noon, the Mustangs are in Topeka, Kansas, for a dual match with No. 11-ranked Washburn at Genesis Topeka Southwest.
The Mustangs finished last season with a 22-5 record, including a 10-0 mark in the Lone State Conference, and reached the NCAA Division II semifinals.
MSU defeated Dallas Baptist, 4-1, to win the South Central Regional before eliminating Queens (N.Y.) in the round of 16, 5-0. In the quarterfinals, Midwestern State defeated No. 4-seeded Wingate, 4-3, as Sofia Giraldo clinched the first-ever national semifinal berth for Midwestern State.
Jessica Binzari, Anda Ghinga, Hannah Yip, Sydney Williams and Giraldo are among the seven returning letter winners from last season for the Mustangs.
Binzari begins the year ranked No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings among NCAA Division II players. The senior from Romania reeled off nine straight wins at No. 1 singles last spring before suffering a 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 loss to Eva Siska of Wingate in the national quarterfinals.
Binzari rolled to an 11-1 record in the fall with her only loss coming in the quarterfinals of the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, as Dana Heimen of Flagler College prevailed in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Giraldo, a sophomore from Colombia, is No. 8 in the ITA rankings. Giraldo was 13-8 for the Mustangs last spring, when she made 19 appearances at No. 4 singles and was 11-8. She was 2-0 at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs last spring.
In the fall, Giraldo posted a 10-3 record as she won five-straight matches before losing to Binzari in the final of the ITA South Central Regional at Arlington Tennis Center. Binzari prevailed, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. Giraldo defeated Alexia Zarate Valdez of Harding, 6-4, 6-4, in the ITA Cup Round of 16 before Angelina Linnikova of North Georgia won a quarterfinal encounter, 6-4, 6-2.
Ghinga was the No. 2 seed at the ITA Division II Women's South Central Regional Championships at Arlington Tennis Center in September. The senior from Romania finished last spring with a 23-3 record in singles, including 13 wins at No. 2 singles for the Mustangs.
Yip closed out last season with a 13-match winning streak and was 19-5, including a 12-0 record at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs. Yip won nine of her 10 singles matches in LSC duals.
Williams enjoyed a 12-match winning streak last season as she ran through the conference campaign undefeated at 9-0.
Ghinga and Binzari are the No. 13-ranked doubles team after defeating six nationally ranked opponents last season on their way to a 15-9 record for the Mustangs. The duo played all but one dual match at No. 1 doubles.
Sarah Mazaraki finished last season with a 15-4 record in doubles for the Mustangs. The sophomore from Australia was 8-2 when paired with Williams at No. 3 doubles last spring and was 7-2 when playing alongside Yip. Mazaraki and Yip were 6-2 at No. 2 doubles last year.
Yip played with three different partners in doubles and finished the 2024 campaign with a 15-8 record in doubles. Yip and Shreya Chakraborty finished the season with an 8-4 record at No. 2 doubles. Chakraborty is now a graduate assistant for head coach Scott Linn.
Rockhurst finished last season with a 16-7 record overall but was 7-0 on home courts. The Hawks reached the championship of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament but fell to top-seeded Indianapolis, 4-1.
Ella Coleman of Rockhurst was the GLVC Freshman of the Year last spring. Coleman, ranked No. 44 in the nation, finished the campaign with an 18-3 record, playing 20 dual matches at No. 1 singles. Coleman closed the season with a five-match winning streak and did not drop a set during that run.
Washburn opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Illinois-Springfield and followed that with a 7-0 pasting of McKendree.
Leo Floeth and Renske Ubachs have each earned victories at No. 1 singles. Ubachs, Saajida Razick and Jasel Bailey have all started the season with 2-0 record. Bailey played No. 5 singles in both duals. Razick earned victories at No. 4 and No. 3 singles.
Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro are the No. 6-ranked doubles pairing in NCAA Division II, while Isabella Martensson and Floeth are ranked No. 11 in doubles.
Washburn was 20-6 last season and finished 6-2 in the MIAA. The Ichabods won the Central Region Championship, defeating Missouri Western State, 4-1, to reach the NCAA National Championships for a third consecutive season. Wayne State defeated Washburn in the Round of 16, 4-1.
