TYLER, Texas -- No. 19-ranked Midwestern State returns to action this week with three dual matches at the UT Tyler Invitational. The Mustangs face Auburn-Montgomery on Friday at 1 p.m. before meeting No. 2-ranked West Florida on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. MSU will close out the event against West Alabama on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
The Mustangs have not played a dual match since defeating Harding, 4-3, in Stillwater, Okla., on Feb. 14 and enter this week with a 2-1 record.
Filip Vacula continued an impressive start to his collegiate career. The freshman from Czechia took out No. 4-ranked Cas De Ruiter, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Juan David Duque and
Jose Marquez won three-set matches in singles, and
Philip Kamara, a junior from Romania, earned his first win of the year with a 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory over Caleb Folse at No. 5 singles.
Vacula has faced three top-10 singles players in his first three collegiate matches at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs and is 2-1, including a win over No. 10-ranked Semyon Tsyrenov of Rockhurst.
The Mustangs are also 2-1 at No. 5 singles with wins from
Killian Guillou and Kamara.
No. 16-ranked
Bruno Sanchez, a sophomore from Spain, has been manning No. 2 singles and opened his season with a win over No. 21-ranked Louis Keiner of Rockhurst. Sanchez lost to No. 15-ranked Vaclav Schneider of Washburn, 1-6, 5-7, and fell in three straights to No. 27-ranked Adrian Solorzano of Harding, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6.
Midwestern State is 8-10 in singles matches through its first three dual matches, and its record in doubles is 2-6.
Sanchez and
Justin Van Amerongen scored a 7-6 victory over Pavlos Parson and Zinovii Nahirniak of No. 8 Washburn at No. 3 doubles, while Vacula and
Stephen Slocombe opened the season with a 6-4 victory over Creed Skinner and Tsyrenov of Rockhurst at No. 2 doubles.
Midwestern State is facing Auburn Montgomery for the second time after earning a 4-3 victory against the Hawks in Tyler last year.
Auburn-Montgomery is 2-2 after posting a 4-3 victory over West Alabama and defeating Tuskegee, 7-0.
Giuseppe Bonaiuti is 3-1 at No. 1 singles for the Warhawks, and Raphael Pertusier is 3-0 with a win at No. 3 singles and two victories at No. 4 singles.
The Warhawks are 5-7 in doubles this season with Giuseppe and Jami Savolainen 2-2 at No. 1 doubles.
The sternest test of the weekend is expected to come from No. 2-ranked West Florida. Midwestern State is 1-6 all-time against West Florida, including a 4-0 loss in Tyler last year.
The Argonauts are 8-0 to start the season, including wins over four teams ranked in the ITA top-25. West Florida is coming off a 4-0 win at Delta State on Feb. 26.
The Argonauts are 35-6 in singles, led by Miguel Cabrera at No 1 singles and Sebastian Rondon at No. 2 singles. West Florida has one loss at every singles position through eight dual matches.
West Florida is 13-7 in doubles. Rondon and Diego Duran are 5-2 at No. 1 doubles. Sebastian Sotelo and Tomas Leston are 4-0 in doubles with three wins coming at No. 3 doubles.
The Mustangs defeated West Alabama in Tyler last year, 6-1. The Tigers enter this year's event with a 2-3 record after falling at Auburn Montgomery on Feb. 16, 4-3.
West Alabama is 18-12 in singles with 4-1 records at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Midwestern State plays its home opener on March 7 as Northwest Missouri State visits MSU Tennis Center with first serve at 2 p.m.
