WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State opened up Lone Star Conference play on Friday, and Game 1 of the doubleheader with St. Mary's featured 30 combined hits, but the Rattlers pulled away for a 9-5 victory. In the second game, St. Mary's starting pitcher Madeline Bloom kept the Mustangs from scoring, and the Rattlers completed the sweep with an 8-0 triumph in five innings.
GAME 1 | Saint Mary's (TX) 9, Midwestern State 5
WICHITA FALLS, Texas --The Midwestern State Mustangs got a boost from sophomore Sydney Linn, who collected three hits in a 9-5 loss to the Saint Mary's (TX) Rattlers Friday.
Senior Zoe Isom (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Midwestern State (3-7, 0-1). Junior Sydney Gonzales was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking one and striking out two.
Linn's three-hit day led the Mustangs offensively. Senior Camile Nunez put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Madison Stewart also helped Midwestern State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when senior Jessika Roberts came across to score the only run of the inning for Midwestern State.
The Mustangs deficit expanded to 7-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the third inning. The Midwestern State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Stewart, which tightened the Rattlers lead to 7-5. The Mustangs were unable to get any closer, as Saint Mary's (TX) added two runs to their tally on the way to a 9-5 final.

Sophomore Addison Lindemann (1-4) started and took the loss in the circle for Midwestern State (3-8, 0-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Midwestern State managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Mustangs last got a runner on third in the third, when sophomore Emma Roach made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.
