ROCKWALL, Texas – Midwestern State shot 1-over 289 in the second round of the DBU Classic at Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club and sits in fifth place entering the final round on Tuesday.
Ryan Griff and Seth Bearden are two of the 10 players in red numbers after 36 holes and have placed the Mustangs within 16 shots of No. 3-ranked Central Oklahoma, which is 7-under atop the team leaderboard through 36 holes.
Griff is tied for fourth on the players leaderboard at 3-under 141. The sophomore from Bulverde, Texas, is trailing the leader Lewis Wright of TCU, competing as an individual, by five strokes. Bearden is 2-under 142 in a tie for sixth place.
 Griff and Bearden were both under par in each round on Monday. Griff shot 2-under 70 in the opening round and followed that up with a 1-under 71. Bearden finished 1-under in each round at the par-72, 7,182-yard course.
Midwestern State is trailing three top-25 teams and Southern Arkansas.
The Muleriders are tied with No. 9-ranked St. Mary's, two strokes behind UCO in second place at 5-under par. No. 25-ranked Dallas Baptist, the host school, is in fourth place at 3-over par.
No. 11-ranked UT Permian Basin will start the third round three strokes behind the 33rd-ranked Mustangs at 12-over par in sixth place.
Midwestern State recorded the third-most birdies with 30 through the first 36 holes. Southern Arkansas had 38 and Central Oklahoma had 34 birdies during Monday's competition.
Griff had seven birdies, including five in the first round, and Bearden had three birdies over his final eight holes to finish the day with six.
Anniston McIlwain used a steady performance to finish the day in 32nd place at five-over, shooting 3-over in the first round and 2-over in the second round. McIlwain birdied the par-5 16th-hole twice and finished with seven birdies.
Nathan Nelson had five birdies in his opening round for the Mustangs but finished his first 18 holes at 8-over 80. Nelson had a more consistent round in the afternoon, when he had just two birdies but finished 1-over 73. The sophomore from Gunter, Texas, is 60th on the player leaderboard.
Hank Germany carded all three of his birdies in the second round, shooting 3-over 75 to finish the day at 17-over in 81st place.
Chase Kisver is competing as an individual and shot 3-over in both rounds on Monday and had three birdies in each round. The junior from Flower Mound is 43rd on the player leaderboard.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will be contested on Tuesday.
