Mustangs welcome Lobos for inaugural LSC clash

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is coming off its most lopsided win of the season after defeating Western New Mexico on Thursday, 82-44, and seeks its fifth straight win at home as it hosts Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Sul Ross State will make its fourth-ever appearance at D.L. Ligon Coliseum but its first since February of 1990, and it will be the first-ever meeting as Lone Star Conference opponents.

Zarria Carter posted her ninth double-double with a season-high 26 points while pulling down 14 rebounds against Western New Mexico, which shot 23.7 percent from the field and missed all 10 attempts from 3-point range.

Carter leads the conference in scoring and rebounding. The native of Mansfield, Texas, is averaging 19.7 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for the Mustangs. She is third in the nation with nine double-doubles through the first 14 games of the season. Carter is the 12th-leading scorer among NCAA Division II players and the sixth-leading rebounder.

Carter also has the best field goal percentage in the LSC, hitting 51.6 percent of her shots. She is 111-of-215 from the field, leading the conference in field goals and attempts.

Cash is the second-leading scorer for Midwestern State with 12 points per game, and she is also the second-leading rebounder with 6.4 boards per contest. The freshman from Wylie, Texas, is averaging 14.8 points against LSC opponents while grabbing 7.4 rebounds in conference games.

Carter and Cash are both among the LSC top-10 in free-throws made and attempted. Carter is 54 of 82 (65.9 percent), and Cash is 49 of 67 (73.1 percent). Carter has the most attempts from the foul line, and Cash has the fourth-most tries in the LSC.

The Mustangs are third in the league with 41.8 rebounds per game, which is 34th in the nation, and they are grabbing 15.8 offensive rebounds per game, which is second in the conference and 21st among NCAA Division II programs.

Carisa Cortez and Catalina Cortez have combined for 3.7 assists per game, and the Stang Gang is scoring 60.1 points per game.

The Mustangs are the second-best team in the league with 11.4 steals per game, and they are forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the conference with 19.4 per game.

Carter leads the conference with 37 total steals and 2.6 steals per game. Calyssa Sevier has the third-most steals in the LSC with 28 and Emillia Steele is sixth with 25 steals. Sevier has 15 steals in her last five games, and Steele had seven takeaways at Eastern New Mexico. Cash has 20 steals, while Trinidi King and Alyssa Hutterer each have 11 for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State is holding opponents to 61.6 points per game, which is the ninth-best scoring defense in the LSC. Opponents are shooting 38.3 percent from the field against the Mustangs and only 26.1 percent from beyond the arc, which is the fifth-best 3-point percentage defense in the conference.

Midwestern State is 3-0 in its all-time series with Sul Ross State, and all three encounters have been in Wichita Falls. MSU won the first meeting, 71-57, in February of 1985 and four years later, Midwestern State routed the Lobos again, 81-58. MSU won the last matchup in 1990, 84-48.

The Lobos arrive at D.L. Ligon Coliseum 35 years later with a 2-9 record overall and a 1-7 mark in conference action. Sul Ross State has lost eight straight games since posting back-to-back wins over Western New Mexico and Northern New Mexico in late November. The Lobos are 0-4 on the road this season.

Sul Ross State is the second-lowest scoring team in the conference with 58.2 points per game and has allowed a league-worst 76.8 points per game. The Lobos are shooting 32.8 percent from the field and its opponents are hitting 46.8 percent of their shots.

From beyond the arc, Sul Ross State is shooting 24.2 percent, led by Melody Martinez, who is 14 of 43 from 3-point range (32.6 percent).

TaMaiya Mims and Martinez are both scoring 11.6 points per game and are the only two Lobos scoring in double figures.

Cheyanne Bonilla is averaging 2.6 assists per game and Mims is dishing out 2.4 assists per contest. Sul Ross State is averaging the second-fewest assists per game in the LSC with 8.45 per contest.

Victoria Aguayo is the leading rebounder for Sul Ross State with 4.7 boards per game, and Mims pulls down four rebounds a game for the Lobos, who average just 28.2 rebounds a per game. The minus -15.5 rebounding margin is the worst in the league.

The Lobos have attempted the third-fewest free throws in the LSC and have the worst free-throw percentage in the league at 65.8 percent.

Sul Ross State has the second-best turnover margin in the LSC at plus-4.73 and is only averaging 12.6 turnovers per game.

The Lobos have 100 steals through 11 games and are seventh in the conference with 9.09 steals per game, but Sul Ross State has only blocked four shots this season.

Midwestern State travels to Angelo State for a showdown with the Rambelles on Thursday evening. Tipoff at Junell Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
