WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has won nine of its last 10 dual matches and is No. 3 in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, the highest mark in the history of the program.
The Mustangs are 7-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and improved to 12-3 with their 6-1 win over Texas A&M-KIngsville on Saturday. Midwestern State is 4-0 in the Lone Star Conference and is visiting Western New Mexico on Friday.
Midwestern State has posted wins over No. 7-ranked West Alabama, No. 6-ranked Embry-Riddle, No. 12-ranked Washburn, No. 15-ranked Angelo State, No. 21-ranked Lubbock Christian, No. 39-ranked St. Mary's and No. 49-ranked Findlay.
Two of the Mustangs losses have come against No. 9-ranked Flagler and No. 10-ranked Auburn Montgomery.
The Mustangs are the highest-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference. Cameron is ranked No. 31 and hosts MSU in the regular season finale on April 20.
Hannah Yip is ranked No. 31 with a straight-set win over No. 3-ranked Maja Jung of Washburn, 6-4, 7-6 (2). The junior from Malaysia is 4-0 in three-set matches this season, including a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 over No. 51-ranked Maja Issler of Embry-Riddle. Yip has a four-match winning streak following a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Manuelo Turolo of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Anda Ghinga, a junior from Romania, is ranked No. 42 among NCAA Division II singles players and improved to 13-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Luna Jokanovic of Texas A&M-Kingsville. Ghinga is 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
Jessica Binzari, who has anchored No. 1 singles for MSU, is ranked No. 43. The transfer from Coker is 5-8 in dual matches, including four losses to nationally ranked foes. Nadja Meier of Flagler is ranked No. 2 in the nation and defeated Binzari in St. Augustine, Florida, earlier this month, 6-4, 6-1. Binzari also faced No. 30-ranked Itxasco Blanco of Embry-Riddle during the Spring Break road trip and lost 6-1, 6-4 on March 12 in Daytona Beach. In the recent homestand, Binzari fell to No. 9-ranked Letizia Corsini of Angelo State, 6-4, 6-1, and No. 6-ranked Alessa Maier of TAMUK prevailed 6-7 (4), 6-7 (1).
Binzari and Ghinga, who are 8-5 in doubles matches for the Mustangs, are ranked No. 32 among NCAA Division II pairings and have seven wins at No. 1 doubles in dual matches.
