Mustangs visit Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State for LSC duals

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 24-ranked Midwestern State won its last four dual matches and enters conference play this week with a trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 31-ranked Angelo State. The Mustangs visit the Javelinas for a noon dual on Friday before facing the Rambelles in San Angelo on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (8-4) completed a rigorous non-conference schedule with a 4-1 win over Hawaii Hilo at MSU Tennis Center last week.

Selin Sepken improved to 8-1 at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Pia Starnecker. It was the third consecutive victory for the senior from Turkey, who transferred to MSU from Idaho. The fifth-year senior has only conceded 10 games in her last three matches. Sepken's only defeat this season was a three-set loss to No. 11-ranked Carlota Verdu of West Florida.

Emilia Gyorgy has a five-match winning streak and improved to 8-4 this season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johanna Roggenkamp of Hawaii Hilo. Gyorgy is 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents this season, and two losses have come in three-set decisions. During the recent winning streak, the freshman from Hungary defeated No. 33-ranked Ane Dannhauser of Hilldale, 7-5, 0-6, 6-1.

Camila Garcia is 9-1 at No. 3 singles for the Mustangs this season and has reeled off three consecutive straight-set victories since suffering back-to-back losses. Garcia was on the verge of a fourth straight victory against Hawaii Hilo, but the match was unfinished with the sophomore from Colombia leading Anna Takahashi, 6-4, 5-1.

Alessia Dolce is heating up in the No. 4 position for MSU, winning her last three singles matches, improving her singles record to 6-4 this season. Dolce has not dropped a set since 2-6, 1-6 loss to Daisy Barrow of Northeastern State at No. 3 singles.

Freshman Jasmine Crain is becoming a fixture at No. 5 singles, with three wins in her last five appearances. She lost a tightly contested battle with Esther Sura of Hillsdale to end a three-match winning streak, but held a 6-3, 4-3 lead over Victoria Ricaurte-Cabas of Hawaii Hilo when the Mustangs clinched the dual-match victory.

The Mustangs are 2-8 with three different players competing at No. 6 singles, and junior Hattie Berend of Wichita Falls has both wins.

Midwestern State won the doubles point in each of its last seven dual matches and has taken the opening point in 11 of 12 dual matches this season. The Mustangs are 27-6 in doubles, led by the pairing of Garcia and Crain, who have won all 12 matches at No. 2 doubles. Sepken and Gyorgy are 9-3 at No. 1 doubles. Berend and Dolce have won all four of their matches as the No. 3 doubles pairing for the Mustangs.
