DURANT, Okla. -- Midwestern State is back on the road this weekend to face Southeastern Oklahoma State after splitting two dual matches last weekend in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. First serve at Southeastern Tennis Complex is scheduled for Saturday at noon.
The Mustangs opened the season with a 5-2 win over Southern Arkansas before falling to No. 23 Ouachita Baptist, 6-1.
Philip Kamara has started the season with a 2-0 record. The sophomore from Romania defeated Matthew Tennant of Southern Arkansas in a match tiebreak, 10-4, and upended Elias Lagger of Ouachita Baptist, 6-4, 6-4. Kamara played No. 6 singles in both dual matches last week.
Killian Guillou,
Stephen Slocombe and
Justin Van Amerongen are all 1-1 after the opening weekend.
Guillou, a sophomore from France, scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ole Valkyser of Southern Arkansas but lost to Alex Blanchar of Ouachita Baptist, 4-6, 3-6. Guillou played No. 2 singles twice last week.
Junior
Stephen Slocombe posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Frode Neumann of Southern Arkansas before losing a tight match to Ramon Strassmann of Ouachita Baptist, 6-7 (8), 4-6. Slocombe manned No. 4 singles in Arkadelphia.
Van Amerongen, a 6-1 junior from the Netherlands, transferred to MSU from Blue Mountain College and made a good first impression with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Pierre Copin of Southern Arkansas. Van Amerongen returned to the No. 5 position against Ouachita Baptist but lost to Moritz Buss, 2-6, 4-6.
Luis Diaz Argente is seeking his first dual match win of the year in singles after starting 0-2 at No. 3 singles. However, Diaz and Slocombe were 2-0 at No. 1 doubles, including a 6-3 win over the No. 3-ranked duo of Valkyser and Tennant from Ouachita Baptist.
Germano Setti played No. 1 singles in both dual matches last week and lost two close matches to nationally ranked opponents. No. 35 Tim Fischer of Southern Arkansas prevailed, 7-6 (9), 6-3, and No. 13 Phil Exner of Ouachita Baptist pulled out a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Setti and Guillou were 1-1 at No. 2 doubles, and
Juan David Duque and
Marcal Miret Avante finished 1-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Southeastern, 37-4, and has won the last three encounters, including a 4-0 victory at MSU Tennis Center last season. Slocombe and Guillou clinched MSU's first point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Diaz, Setti and Avante all won singles matches for the Mustangs.
The Savage Storm last beat MSU in February of 2020, 4-3, at Southeastern Tennis Complex. Midwestern State is 15-2 all-time when visiting Southeastern.
Southeastern has started the season with a 3-1 record, including a 5-2 victory over Dallas Baptist in Arlington, Texas, last week.
In a preseason poll, the Savage Storm were picked to finish third in the MIAA/GAC South Division. Last season, Southeastern finished 11-10 but reached the Central Regional.
Juan Gonzalez and Martin Jurkovic, who were both all-conference selections last season, are back with the Savage Storm this year along with Thabo Ncube and Gen Naraya.
Midwestern State will next see action at the UT Tyler Invitational March 1-3.
