WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Zarria Carter and Emillia Steele combined to score 29 total points - 60.4 percent of Midwestern State's points - but the Mustangs fell to the Oklahoma Baptist Bison 78-48 Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Carter notched her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (1-4). Steele tacked on 10 points and Calyssa Sevier chipped in as well with nine points.
Midwestern State grabbed 42 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Oklahoma Baptist's 34, led by Carter's 18 boards. The Mustangs also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 12 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-2, Midwestern State went on a 5-0 run with 5:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Carter, to take a 7-6 lead. The Mustangs then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 11-7.
The Mustangs continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 28-23 halftime deficit.
Midwestern State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Mustangs faced a 54-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Midwestern State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
Midwestern State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 78-48. Midwestern State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.
