AMARILLO, Texas -- Senior Gatlin Goad carded a pair of scores in the 60s to lead Midwestern State in the opening two rounds of the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational Monday afternoon at the Amarillo Country Club.

Goad logged 10 birdies with seven of them coming in the second round to finish with scores of 69 and 66 for a 5-under total of 135. The Wheeler, Texas, native delivered his first two scores in the 60s this season and now seven over the past two seasons for the Mustangs.

Goad stands six strokes behind tournament leader Kongpop Kaikaew, who transferred from UT Permian Basin to St. Mary's over the summer. Kaikaew logged scores of 67 and 62 for an 11-under 129 to forge a three-stroke lead over Oklahoma Christian's Leandro Mihaich (65-67 132/-8).

The Mustangs combined to post five par-or-better scores on the way to posting team totals of 282 and 275 for a 3-under 557 to surge into a tie for sixth place.

"We got off to a slow start, then made the turn after 18 and battled back," MSU assistant coach J.T. Boyd said. "We definitely fought hard for the second 18. We made some good decisions and some good swings, but didn't score our best."

Oklahoma Christian fired scores of 273 and 266 for a 21-under total of 539 to take a 12-stroke lead over Colorado School of Mines (551/-9).

The Mustangs are in a group including Colorado Mesa (553/-7), Fort Lewis (555/-5), and West Texas A&M (555/-5) chasing the Orediggers.

Senior Trevor Walsh (72-68) is tied for 26th with a even-par 140, just ahead of fellow senior Seth Bearden (72-69), who tied for 32nd with a 1-over 141.

Senior James Perry (71-72) logged a 3-over total of 143 to tie for 46th, along with freshman squad mate Ryan Griff (70-73).

The final round of the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
