Midwestern State struggles in second round, slips to 18th at NCAA DII West/South Central Regional

Bearden shoots 3-under in second round, tied for 14th place entering final round

STOCKTON, Calif. – Midwestern State had 23 bogeys as a team, including nine on the final four holes of the front nine, and fell down the leaderboard into a tie for 18th place on Friday afternoon after shooting 9-over 299 in the second round at the NCAA DII West/South Central Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Seth Bearden had four birdies and two bogeys in his second round and was the only Mustang in red numbers on Friday, shooting 2-under 70. Bearden moved to 3-under for the tournament and is in a five-way tie for 14th place on the individual leaderboard. The senior from Crowell, Texas, is the only member of the team in the top-50.

Conrad Brown of Western Washington shot 6-under 66 in the second round and is atop the individual leaderboard at 8-under with 18 holes to play on Saturday. Brown leads a group of three golfers by one stroke.

The Mustangs started the day in a three-way tie for 12th place after shooting 5-over in the opening round on Thursday. MSU was tied with Vanguard and Chico State. Vanguard was just one stroke better than Midwestern State during the middle round of the 54-hole event. Chico State shot 13-under in the second round and moved to fourth place on the team leaderboard, trailing the leaders Western Washington and West Texas A&M by three strokes entering the final round.

West Texas A&M shot 7-under 281 to keep pace with Western Washington, which opened with a 5-under 283 in the  opening round and followed that up with a 6-under 282 in the second round. Cal State San Bernardino is just one stroke behind the leaders through 36 holes.

Anniston McIlwain had one of the highlights of the second round for Midwestern State with an eagle on the par 5, 535-yard 16th hole. McIlwain also recorded a birdie on the 435-yard, par 4 third hole. The sophomore from Bulverde, Texas, shot 3-over 75 in the second round and is tied for 59th place at 4-over 148 through two rounds.

Ryan Griff tied for the team lead with four birdies in the second round, but finished the round 6-over 78 and is in a tie for 84th place at 7-over for the tournament.

Nathan Nelson had two birdies on the back nine and carded a 2-over 74 in the second round, improving on the 7-over 79 he shot on Thursday. Nelson is in a tie for  98th place at 9-over 153.

Chase Kisver had a birdie on each side of the course but finished the second round with a 6-over 68 and is tied for 100th place at 10-over 154 entering the final round.

Midwestern State will begin its final round at 7:30 CDT on Saturday morning at the 7,082-yard link style course, featuring rye-grass fairways and bent grass greens.
