Midwestern State journeys to Laredo to tangle with TAMIU

LAREDO, Texas -- Midwestern State seeks its fourth win in conference play as it travels to face Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Soccer Field on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Mustangs are coming off their fourth draw in their last six matches. Cassidy Savoy scored her seventh goal of the season in the 22nd minute, but Oklahoma Christian scored the equalizer in the 80th minute, and MSU settled for a 1-1 draw at Stang Park on Wednesday night.

Midwestern State is 7-2-4 for the season and 3-1-4 in conference play. The Mustangs are fifth in the conference standings with 13 points and are 3-2-1 on the road this season.

The Mustangs have conceded at least one goal in all but one match this season. MSU defeated Oklahoma Baptist, 1-0, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, on Sept. 14. TWU and Angelo State each scored twice against the Stangs, but each game resulted in a 2-2 draw.

Midwestern State has a plus-14 goal differential this season, outscoring opponents, 28-14, and in the second half of matches, MSU has outscored its opponents, 19-8.

Goalkeeper Allison Dellis has a 1.08 goals-against average and has made 67 saves with a save percentage of .838 through 12 matches for the Mustangs.

Cassidy Savoy leads the team with seven goals and 16 points this season. Madison Brinkley has scored six goals.

Allessandra Romano, who suffered a season-ending injury on Oct. 2 in a 2-2 draw at Texas Woman's, has missed the last five games but is second in the LSC with five assists this season.

Lexi Beck has four assists for the Stangs, and Nyxalee Munoz has assisted on three tallies.

Munoz has scored three goals for the Mustangs. Beck, Sarah Hayes, Jimena Rodriguez and Lillia Besedin have all scored twice for MSU this season.

Midwestern State is 3-2-1 on the road this season with a 2-1-1 record as the away side in conference matches. The Mustangs suffered their only conference defeat at St. Edward's on Oct. 19 as the Hilltoppers prevailed, 1-0.

The Mustangs have a plus-5 goal differential on the road, outscoring their hosts, 11-6.

Midwestern State is 6-0-3 in the all-time series with TAMIU, including a 4-0-1 record at Dusdevil Soccer Field. The Mustangs won the first six meetings, outscoring the Dustdevils, 30-1, but the last three encounters have all resulted in draws, including a 1-1 fixture at Stang Park last season. The last time the two schools met in Laredo, the result was also a 1-1 draw in 2022.

The Dustdevils are winless in their last five matches and have a 3-6-5 overall record with a 2-4-3 conference mark. TAMIU is 1-2-1 on its home pitch this season.

Annie Rocha scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, and St. Edward's defeated TAMIU in Austin on Wednesday night, 2-0. Goalkeeper Claramalia Pedersen made four saves in the loss for the Dustdevils.

Pedersen has allowed 13 goals in 11 matches and has a 1.25 goals-against average. She has 59 saves and a save percentage of .812 with four shutouts this season.

TAMIU has a minus-3 goal differential and has been outscored this season, 19-16. Krysan St. Louis is the leading goal scorer for TAMIU with four goals on 15 shots and has put 10 of her shots on frame.

Janize Castillo has three goals and four players have each scored two goals for the Dustdevils, including Candela Gonzalez, who has scored two game-winning goals. TAMIU is averaging 1.18 goals per game.

The Dustdevils have been issued a conference-leading 22 yellow cards this season, which is third-most among NCAA Division II programs.

Jovany Macias is in his second season as the head coach at TAMIU and has a record of 11-11-10.

Midwestern State returns to Stang Park for a clash with UT Permian Basin on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
