WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State (12-8) is coming off an agonizing loss at UT Tyler on Tuesday but faces another stern test on Thursday as No. 17-ranked Cameron (10-3) visits MSU Tennis Center for a pivotal dual match in the Lone Star Conference. First serve is scheduled for noon.
The Aggies and Mustangs are both 5-1 in conference play, and both teams suffered 4-3 losses to UT Tyler, which is 8-0 in the LSC.
Midwestern State is 6-2 at home this season with a 3-0 record when hosting LSC opponents. Cameron is 4-1 in road duals this season and 3-0 when visiting conference rivals.
The Mustangs lead the all-time series, 31-27, and are 14-6 against the Aggies in Wichita Falls. In the last 15 meetings between the two programs, Midwestern State has won eight duals. Cameron won the last encounter in the NCAA Division II South Central Region No. 2 championship, 4-2, at MSU Tennis Center last year.
Midwestern State won the regular season clash at home last season, 5-2.
Luis Diaz Argente, ranked No. 54 in the nation, had a four-match winning streak snapped with a 4-6, 1-6 loss to 13th-ranked Juan Bianchi of UT Tyler. Diaz is 1-3 against nationally ranked opponents and has a 10-9 overall singles record. Diaz has made 15 consecutive appearances at No. 1 singles and is 4-2 in conference matches.
Charles Heffernan is coming off his first conference loss. The senior from Australia fell to sixth-ranked Gonzalo Fernandez of UT Tyler, 2-6, 3-6. Heffernan is 5-1 against LSC competition and 8-5 at No. 2 singles for the Mustangs.
Marcal Miret Avante has won six of his last eight matches overall but is coming off a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Egor Shestakov of UT Tyler. Miret is 12-7 in singles overall and has won four of his six matches against conference opponents.
Killian Guillou is 11-0 this season and has won his last four matches in the No. 4 position. Guillou is 6-0 in conference matches and won his last match at home over Roberto Arrabal of UT Permian Basin, 6-0, 6-1. The freshman from Paris, France, has only dropped two sets against conference opponents.
Germano Setti has come away victorious in all six conference clashes this season, winning three of those matches in three sets. Setti defeated Nikita Deev of Lubbock Christian 6-2 in the third set. The freshman from Brazil got past Oskar Irdoja of St. Mary's and Brendan Lock of Western New Mexico in match tiebreaks. Setti has a five-match winning streak and is 4-0 at No. 5 singles for the Mustangs.
Stephen Slocombe is 5-2 in singles this season following a 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 loss to Yudai Watanabe of UT Tyler on Tuesday. Slocombe has a 2-2 conference record and is 4-2 at No. 6 singles, where the Mustangs have won 11 of 13 matches this season.
Slocombe has been paired with Diaz for his last five doubles matches, which have all been against conference opponents, and the duo is 3-2.
Heffernan and Guillou have reeled off four straight wins in doubles, including a 6-2 victory over Jordi Garcia and Jonas Dixon of UT Tyler. The only loss for the duo was a 7-5 setback to Martins Abamu and Herman Aguirre at Lubbock Christian.
Setti and Miret are 10-8 overall in doubles this season and 4-2 against LSC opponents. The duo is 4-0 at No. 2 doubles and won their last three matches for the Mustangs.
Cameron has posted back-to-back wins since falling to UT Tyler at home on April 3. The Aggies defeated Washburn, 4-3, and routed St. Mary's 6-1.
Baptiste Mercier has a 12-match winning streak, including six conference victories, and is 12-1 this season. Mercier lost a third-set tiebreak to Miret at No. 4 singles in his last encounter with the Mustangs. The junior from Bellegarde, France, has won his last 20 sets and has not been forced into a third set since posting a win over Southwest Baptist on March 5. Mercier is 11-0 at No. 3 singles.
Kristian Kubik is 11-1 with an 11-match winning streak for the Aggies. The 6-2 sophomore from the Czech Republic is coming off a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Aaron Ben Anton of St. Mary's. He has won his last four conference matches in straight sets. Heffernan defeated Kubik at No. 5 singles in the NCAA Division II South Central Region No. 2 championship last year, 6-3, 6-1.
Tomas Lameida has lost his last two singles matches at the No. 1 position but is 4-1 in LSC showdowns this season. Lameida is 6-4 in singles this season for the Aggies.
Thomas Cardona is 5-1 in the LSC and has won six of his last eight matches for Cameron, including a 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 victory over Oskar Irdoja of St. Mary's in his last outing.
Merceir and Joao Duleba are 9-2 at the No. 2 position in doubles with a 5-1 conference record.
Kubik and Emilio Seelbach are 11-1 at the No. 3 position in doubles, reeling off 11 consecutive victories. The duo is 6-0 against LSC opponents.
Cameron is 28-9 overall in doubles this season, and 15-3 in conference clashes. The Aggies won the doubles point in their last dual against Midwestern State.
Midwestern State returns to the court on Saturday and will celebrate Senior Day as Arkansas-Fort Smith visits MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for noon.
