TYLER, Texas -- The two teams atop the Lone Star Conference standings meet Tuesday at Summers Tennis Center as No. 7-ranked UT Tyler (16-1) hosts No. 28-ranked Midwestern State (12-7). The Mustangs are 5-0 against conference opponents and have won their last four dual matches, but the Patriots have a 15-dual winning streak and are 7-0 in the LSC.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 6-3, but lost its last encounter with UT Tyler, 4-2, as the Patriots prevailed in the Lone Star Conference championship match at Arlington Tennis Center last year. The Mustangs won the regular season meeting at MSU Tennis Center last year, 4-3, as
Stefan Andrei pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jonas Dixon at No. 6 singles to clinch the dual for MSU.
The Mustangs are coming off a 7-0 win at Dallas Baptist on Saturday. Midwestern State did not drop a set and improved to 9-0 in the all-time series. The Mustangs are 27-3 in singles matches against conference opponents and are 11-4 in doubles when facing LSC foes.
Luis Diaz Argente, ranked No. 50 in the nation, has a four-match winning streak at No. 1 singles and has won eight consecutive sets since dropping the first set to 13th-ranked Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian. In his last three matches, Diaz has only dropped nine games.
Charles Heffernan is one of three Mustangs boasting a 5-0 record against conference opponents. Heffernan has won his last four matches at No. 2 singles, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Matthew Abbey of Dallas Baptist in his last outing. Heffernan has won seven consecutive sets since dropping the second set against Kelly Giese at Lubbock Christian.
Marcal Miret Avante has won six of his last seven matches overall, and his only loss came to Grzegorz Rudnicki of UT Permian Basin in a match tiebreak. Rudnicki prevailed, 15-13. The sophomore from Spain eased past Aaron Capone of Dallas Baptist at No. 3 singles on Saturday, 6-0, 6-4.
Killian Guillou is 10-0 this season and has won his last three matches in the No. 4 position. Guillou has only lost one set in league matches and has only dropped two games in his last two outings for the Mustangs, defeating Ricardo Carvajalino of Dallas Baptist, 6-1, 6-0. The freshman from Paris, France, has recorded nine victories in straight sets this year.
Germano Setti has come away victorious in all five conference clashes this season, winning three of those matches in three sets. Setti defeated Nikita Deev of Lubbock Christian 6-2 in the third set. The freshman from Brazil got past Oskar Irdoja of St. Mary's and Brendan Lock of Western New Mexico in match tiebreaks. Setti has a four-match winning streak and is 3-0 at No. 5 singles for the Mustangs.
Stephen Slocombe is 5-1 in singles this season and has won his last two matches at No. 6 singles in straight sets, defeating Edgar Mayorga of Dallas Baptist, 6-1, 6-3. Slocombe, Guillou and
Philip Kamara have propelled Midwestern State to an 11-1 record at No. 6 singles.
Slocombe has been paired with Diaz for his last four doubles matches, and the duo is 3-1, including road wins at Lubbock Christian and Dallas Baptist.
Heffernan and Guillou have reeled off three straight wins in doubles, including 6-1 victories over UT Permian and Dallas Baptist. The only loss for the duo was a 7-5 setback to Abamu and Herman Aguirre at Lubbock Christian.
Setti and Miret are 9-8 overall in doubles this season and 3-2 against LSC opponents. The duo is 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and won their last two matches for the Mustangs.
Gonzalo Fernandez and Joaquin Bianchi lead UT Tyler, which is seeking its 16th consecutive win in a dual match and is 6-0 at home this season.
Fenandez is ranked No. 6 among Division II singles players in the nation. Fernandez ran his winning streak to 18 consecutive matches with a three-set triumph over Abamu at Lubbock Christian on Saturday. Fernandez played No. 1 singles against MSU in the conference tournament championship last year and lost to
Alex Martinez Roca, 6-4, 6-3.
Bianchi is No. 13 in the latest Division II singles rankings but is coming off a 5-7, 6-4, 5-7 loss to Giese of Lubbock Christian at No. 1 singles on Saturday. The senior from Argentina defeated the Mustangs'
Brice Bradshaw at No. 2 singles in the LSC Championship dual at Arlington Tennis Center last year.
Egor Shestakov had an 11-match winning streak snapped with a 3-6, 4-6 loss to Baptiste Merecier of Cameron on April 3. However, the Patriots won the dual, 4-3, handing the Aggies their only conference loss of the season.
Shestakov is coming off a 6-3, 2-6, 4-6 win over Aguirre of Lubbock Christian. The 6-1 junior from Russia lost to Andrei in the LSC Championship dual-match last season, 6-7 (1), 3-6.
Fernandez and Shestakov are a formidable doubles team for the Patriots with nine consecutive wins in the No. 1 position.
The Patriots have earned the doubles point in each of their last 10 dual-matches.
Midwestern State hosts Cameron at MSU Tennis Center on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
