Falcons fly in to face Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 28-ranked Midwestern State (10-7) hopes to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference dual matches as UT Permian Basin (8-6) visits MSU Tennis Center on Saturday. The MSU Mustangs improved to 3-0 in conference duals on Friday with a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Midwestern State is 5-2 at home this season and is 4-0 when hosting UTPB.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 10-0, and defeated the Falcons in Midland last year, 5-2.

Midwestern State has won 15 of its 17 singles matches during conference duals, and the Mustangs won all six singles matches against WNMU on Friday, including four in straight sets.

Luis Diaz Argente has won his last two singles matches and cruised past Patricio Larrea of WNMU on Friday, 6-0, 6-2. Diaz has made 12 straight starts at the No. 1 position in singles and has won three of his last four matches.

Charles Heffernan improved to 6-4 in the No. 2 singles position with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Lachlan Rowing of WNMU. Heffernan is 3-0 in LSC matches and is 4-2 at home this season. Heffernan lost a three-set match to Jorge Carlos Arrabal of UTPB at No. 5 singles last year at Bush Tennis Center in Midland.

Marcal Miret Avante has a five-match winning streak for the Mustangs after breezing past Yu-Jhe Du of WNMU, 6-2, 6-2. Miret is 3-0 against conference foes and 3-1 against regionally ranked opponents this season.

Midwestern State is 13-4 at No. 4 singles, and Killian Guillou improved to 8-0 this year with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Javier Romero of WNMU. Romero was the first player to push Guillou into a third set this season. Guillou picked up his second win of the campaign in the No. 4 position on Friday.

Germano Setti is 11-6 in singles for the Mustangs and has won back-to-back three-set matches. Setti defeated Brandon Locke of WNMU in a super tiebreak at No. 5 singles on Friday. The freshman from Brazil fought off two match points at Lubbock Christian to defeat Nikita Deev, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Setti has won eight of his matches in the No. 4 position.

Midwestern State is 9-1 at No. 6 singles, and Philip Kamara earned his second win in the position on Friday. The freshman from Romania defeated Paul Claussen of WNMU, 6-2, 6-3.

Midwestern State is 27-21 in doubles this year, led by Diaz. The senior from Madrid, Spain, is 11-5 in doubles this season and has won five of his last six doubles matches. Diaz is 9-5 when paired with Juan David Duque but won his last two matches alongside Slocombe. Diaz and Slocombe defeated Javier Romero and Patricio Larrea of WNMU on Friday, 6-2.

Heffernan is 6-5 in doubles matches this season. Guillou is 7-6 and Setti is 7-8 in doubles.

Slocombe has played with three different partners — including Heffernan and Guillou — and is 7-5 in doubles matches for the Mustangs.

UT Permian Basin is 8-6 overall with a 2-3 record in conference dual-matches this season. The Falcons are 4-2 as the visitors this season.

UTPB is seeking its first-ever victory over Midwestern State and has only earned eight points in the 10 previous duals against the Mustangs.

The Falcons have lost three of their last four duals and have suffered back-to-back losses at home to LSC foes— Cameron and Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Aggies defeated the Falcons, 6-1, and UAFS pulled out a 4-3 victory at Bush Tennis Center last week.

Grzegrorz Rudnicki is 8-3 in singles and had a six-match winning streak halted with a three-set loss to Ole Valkyser of Southern Arkansas on March 15. Rudnicki is coming off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Killian Darneaux of UAFS. Rudnicki has played primarily in the No. 4 spot for UTPB.
Jonas Krahofer has reeled off seven consecutive wins in the No. 6 position and defeated Nicolas Retamales of UAFS 6-4, 7-6 (13).

Paul Schweiger has won four of his last five singles matches in the No. 5 position, including a 6-3, 6-3 win over Juan Patino of UAFS last week.

Takumi Katsuda, a freshman from Japan, has lost four of his last five starts in the No. 2 position and is 2-4 in the No. 1 position for the Falcons.

UTPB has lost the doubles point in each of their last four duals. Kosinski and Rudnick won No. 2 doubles against UAFS, but Cameron won all three doubles matches in Midland last week.

Midwestern State travels to UT Tyler on Friday for an LSC dual-match that gets underway at 10 a.m.
