Mustangs set 16 PRs at outdoor season opening Wes Kittley Invitational

ABILENE, Texas -- Midwestern State set 16 personal bests in the outdoor season opening Wes Kittley Invitational Saturday afternoon at Elmer Gray Stadium.

Sophomore Daiza Jones led an impressive performance for the Mustangs in the 400-meter dash by improving on an outdoor PR time to finish eighth with a time of 58.21. The Haltom City native led a group of four sprinters landing in the program's all-time performance chart in the event falling just 0.10 seconds off of a school record.

Junior Asia Robertson improved to fourth all-time by taking 12th on the track with a 58.72, while Da'shrana Sims clocked the school's eighth fastest time of 59.90 to finish 12th just ahead of sophomore Nathalia Escontrias, who completed the 10th-best time in program history of 1:00.67 to place 15th overall.

Sophomore Corinne Thorpe delivered a pair of impressive performances, but was denied a spot in the record books with wind-aided marks.

Thorpe raced to a would-be school record time of 12.13 to take sixth in the 100-meter dash, then clocked a 25.22 to finish 11th in the 200-meter dash. The wind meter registered a +2.7 meters per second in the 100 and a +2.9 in the 200 to nullify the times.

Only freshman Steveanna Hearn managed legal times for the Mustangs. The freshman from Little Elm took advantage to land fifth on the 100-meter performance chart with a time of 12.52 before clocking a 25.65 in the 200-meter dash to move to eighth in program history.

Freshman Jadyn Dangerfield Moore raced to a sixth-place showing in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:19.01 which is the sixth fastest in program history. Dangerfield Moore was just ahead of sophomore Arianna Carballeira, who clocked one of two PRs by finishing 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:24.52.

Carbelliera also raced to a personal best time of 5:00.03 to finish second in the second section of the 1,500-mter run just ahead of teammates Ella Pando (5:10.20/5th) and Cori Morgan (5:18.13/9th), who also registered PRs.

Junior Elizabeth Butzke improved on a personal record to finish fourth in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with an 11:53.70. Her time remains ninth on the school's all-time performance list.

Senior Peyton Lewis enjoyed a strong start to her season by finishing third in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 3 1/2 inches and was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet and 3 inches.

Junior Emily Hurst placed 12th in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 8 1/4 inches.

FRIDAY NIGHT RECAP

Midwestern State upperclassmen Alexandra Feller and Elizabeth Butzke pushed the Mustangs out for a strong start to the outdoor season Friday night in the Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium.

Feller, a senior from McKinney, ran the program's fastest 10,000-meter time in six years vaulting to seventh on MSU's all-time performance chart with a strong time of 38:41.22.

The time was the fastest since Leticia Shaban paced a 38:30.31 at The Beach Invitational during the 2017 as Feller finished runner-up to McMurry's Janeth Chacon, who clocked a 38:29.37.

Butzke, a junior from Mansfield, turned in the fastest 5,000-meter time since Sara Smith and Kim Krezonoski ran times of 18:10.51 and 18:12.58 during the 2016 campaign.

Butzke's time of 18:21.97 was the 10th fastest in program history as she finished fourth behind Texas Tech's Taylor Limbaugh (17:47.94), Abilene Christian's Peyton Bornstein (17:58.94), and St. Edward's Faith Brothers (18:14.95).

Midwestern State also received strong 10,000-meter performances from Sydney MacDonald (40:16.28/4th), Mariana Sanchez (40:21.57/5th), and Rosalene Reyes Perez (41:36.23/8th). Freshman Jadyn Dangerfield Moore placed 13th in premiere section of the 1,500-meter run with a career debut time of 5:01.25.
