DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State showed its depth by challenging Division I North Texas at the bottom of the order Saturday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
Junior
Skylar Minns put the Mustangs on the board at the No. 6 singles position, while fellow junior
Emilija Visic pushed her match to three sets at No. 5.
In the end, the Mean Green overpowered MSU to improve to 5-1 on the on the season.
UNT also boasts wins over Miami (Ohio), St. John's, DePaul, and Lamar with its lone loss coming to No. 1-ranked Texas.
Minns battled her way to win a first-set tiebreaker at 7-3 over UNT's Marina Adati, who was making her collegiate debut. Minns finished off the freshman from Londrina, Brazil, with a 7-5 win in the second set in the final match off of the courts.
Visic, a three-time All-LSC performer during her career, split sets by taking the opener against North Texas senior Kexuan Zhou at 6-4. Zhou rebounded to take the second set by a 6-2 margin before taking the deciding set in a super tiebreaker at 10-5.
North Texas took all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match.
UNT's Jasmine Adams and Olivia Malm defeated Midwestern State's
Kanaha Furutani and Visic 6-3 at No. 2 before Adati teamed with Olivia Halvorsen to claim a 6-4 win over MSU's
Micaela McSpadden and Minns at No. 3.
Midwestern State's No. 1 doubles team of
Amelia Lawson and
Sydney Williams battled UNT's Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Matilde Morais before falling at 7-5.
North Texas won the top four singles flights in straight sets to solidify the victory.
Midwestern State opens regular season play Friday afternoon at Nebraska-Kearney. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
