KEARNEY, Nebraska -- Nebraska-Kearney rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Midwestern State in its debut match in a brand new facility Saturday night at the Ernest Grundy Center.
MSU's
Micaela McSpadden and
Skylar Minns claimed a deciding 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles over UNK's Alexis Bernthal and Merci Hood.
The Mustangs and Lopers split the top doubles position with UNK's Mariya Hatouka and Narindra Ranaivo beating
Emilija Visic and
Hannah Yip at No. 2, before MSU drew even after
Amelia Lawson and
Sydney Williams combined for a 6-3 win over Melisa Becerra and Jazmin Zamorano at No. 1.
Midwestern State junior
Skylar Minns staked the Mustangs to a 2-1 lead by taking Hood in straight sets -- 6-1, 6-1 -- at No. 6 singles.
But the Lopers responded with a pair of straight-set victories of their own at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to set up the clincher at No. 1.
Becerra overcame Lawson 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to allow Nebraska-Kearney to stay perfect at 7-0.
The Lopers and the Mustangs received votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason poll.
Midwestern State (0-1) battles MSU Denver at 8 a.m. and Augustana (S.D.) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Grundy Center.
