WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It just seemed like a matter of time before Midwestern State found the back of the night Thursday night at Stang Park.
The Mustangs suffered through the first 262 minutes of the season without scoring a goal, but as the saying goes, 'All it takes is one.'
And then it happened in the 19th minute when sophomore
Lexi Beck went over the top to find
Isabella Cruz, who tucked the ball past the keeper to the lower left corner of the net to spark a goal scoring spree for the Mustangs in a 4-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State.
The Mustangs dominated possession on the way to controlling an 18-3 edge in shots placing 12 on frame.
Fifth-year senior
Jozy Bardsley's high pressure in the 37th minute led to a turnover allowing the Sioux Falls, S.D. native to literally slide a pass to
Brynn Covington just inside the box.
The freshman from Las Vegas took three touches moving across the face of the goal before burying a shot to the upper right corner of the net to give MSU a 2-0 halftime edge.
The Mustangs took advantage of restarts on corner kicks to score two more goals in the second half.
Senior
Alyssa Salinas received a deflection at the top of the box in the 55th minute and ripped the ball on the ground through the middle of the box. Fellow senior
Randi Heaton trapped and turned to guide the ball past a diving keeper for her eighth career goal.
A little over two minutes later, senior
Keyara Zuniga scored her first goal for the Maroon & Gold by heading in a perfectly lofted ball to the back post by Beck. It was Beck's first two-assist performance as a collegian.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Lexi Jackson faced three shots while making a pair of saves to earn her first career clean sheet.
Midwestern State takes on East Central (Okla.) Sunday afternoon at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
