WICHITA FALLS, Texas - -
Cassidy Savoy scored her first goal of the season with 44 seconds remaining, and Midwestern State defeated East Central, 2-1, for its second straight victory. The Mustangs were the dominant team throughout the 90 minutes Sunday afternoon at Stang Park — but had to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the final 21 minutes to defeat the Tigers.
Midwestern State outshot East Central 21-4, and the Mustangs hit the woodwork four times during the match. But a mistake in the defensive end led to a goal for the Tigers in the 69th minute, and MSU was forced to come from behind.
Paige Jones forced a turnover and got the ball to Abbie Morris just outside the penalty area. Morris delivered a through ball to Kaylee Bruce, who put the Tigers in front with her second goal of the season.
It took Midwestern State a little more than 10 minutes to pull even.
Brynn Covington had just re-entered the game when the Mustangs went on the attack. Bella Cruz received a throw-in and fed a ball up the left touchline to
Lexi Beck. Covington made a run into the middle of the box and tucked a low cross from Beck into the lower left corner of the goal with her first touch to tie the game, 1-1.
It appeared as though MSU would have to settle for a draw as time was running out, but Beck delivered another outstanding cross from the left wing in the waning seconds. Savoy, making a run to the back post, hit a one-timer past ECU goalkeeper Baylee Hensley to score the game-winning goal.
Beck leads the Mustangs with four assists, and Covington has two goals this season. Goalkeeper
Lexi Jackson made two saves in the victory.
Midwestern State improved to 2-2-0 and leads the all-time series with East Central, 16-2-1. The Tigers fall to 0-4-2 with the loss.
The Mustangs open conference play at Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday night, when they face the Greyhounds at 6 p.m. central time.
