WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State took their first loss of the 2022 season falling 4-3 to NJCAA No. 5-ranked Seward County CC Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs dropped the doubles point before rebounding to win three of the six singles matches.
Sydney Williams and
Skylar Minns went undefeated in the match against the Saints.
The duo started strong with a 6-3 victory over Alejandra Sandoval and Jimena Llorens at the third doubles line.
At the top doubles spot,
Anda Ghinga and
Emilija Visic followed with a 3-6 loss to Justine Lespes and Camille Belberka. Lucia Popluharova and Carol Mora secured a 6-2 victory over
Ethne Dowling and
Hannah Yip to clinch the first point of the match for SCCC.
Belberka then overtook
Kyndall Quiroz at No. 3 singles. The freshman's 6-1, 6-0 win gave Seward County their second point.
Minns put the Mustangs in a better spot with her win at the No. 6 singles line. The sophomore scored 7-6, 6-3 against Llorens to put the score at 2-1.
Lespes inched the Saints closer to the fourth point with her win at the top singles spot, beating Ghinga 7-6, 6-4.
The three-set thriller at No. 2 singles was the deciding factor. Yip took the first set 6-3 and Mora secured the second, 6-1. Mora clinched the match for the Saints taking the third set, 6-3.
Dowling gained her own three-set win over Popluharova at the fourth singles court. Popluharova won set one, 6-3, while Dowling posted a 6-0 win in the second. MSU's junior took the final set 7-6.
Williams battled back for a split-set win over Sandoval at No. 5 singles. The freshman won the first set 6-3 and lost the second 2-6 before claiming the tiebreaker in the decisive set.
Midwestern State battles
Midwestern State returns to play next week to take on the top junior college in the nation. Tyler Junior College comes to MSU Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 18 to face the Mustangs at 10 a.m. MSU then travels to Edmond, Okla., to face No. 3 Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 19.
