Top-ranked Apaches too much for Midwestern State, 6-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- NJCAA No. 1-ranked Tyler Junior College rolled to a 6-1 win over Midwestern State Friday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Apaches improved to 4-3, while MSU fell to 2-2.

TURNING POINT

Tyler Junior College's Yeva Kononovych and Yeva Kramarova claimed the tiebreaker over Sydney Williams and Skylar Minns at the No. 3 line to clinch the doubles' point.

The Apaches compounded the advantage by taking the first two singles matches in straight sets. MSU extended the final four matches off the court to split sets.

NOTABLES

- Midwestern State sophomore Kyndall Quiroz beat Kelly Arends 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 to win the Mustangs' only points against the Apaches. Quiroz improved to 2-1 competing at the No. 3 Singles' position this season.
- Junior Casie Curry combined with freshman Hannah Yip to take a 7-5 win over Abigail Wild and Kelly Arends at No. 2 doubles. It was Curry's 50th collegiate doubles match and 42nd win.
- Tyler JC's lineup featured the top-ranked doubles team in NJCAA in Lauren Anzalotta and Destinee Martins, who combined to beat MSU's Emilija Visic and Anda Ghinga -- 6-2 -- at the No. 1 line.
- The Apaches held on to win three of the four split-set singles matches.
- Tyler JC's Lauren Anzalotta (No. 1), Destinee Martins (No. 3), Abigail Wild (No. 7) and Yeva Kramarova (No. 29) sported an ITA national singles' ranking.
- Midwestern State moved to 8-4 overall in doubles this season. The Mustangs are a combined 15-9 in singles play during the duel season.
