Future Mustang claims California Sectional Championship

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Incoming Midwestern State freshman Nolan McCaig closed out his prep career as a champion May 16 with a Sac-Joaquin Division II Sectional singles title at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville, Calif.

The future Mustang earned his first sectional crown in his third finals appearance playing for Ceres High following a 6-3, 6-2 win over River Valley's Luvdeep Bal in the championship match. The sectional round is the highest for a prep athlete in the state of California.

The Modesto native finished his career with a 100-4 record following a 23-0 mark this spring while claiming WAC Conference titles all four years with an undefeated record of 63-0 at No. 1 singles. McCaig was a four-time conference MVP and all-area selection, being tabbed the greatest tennis player in Ceres High's history.

A three-star recruit and ranked in the top 250 nationally, McCaig is the second champion in MSU's 2017 signing class with incoming freshman Yash Mylavarapu claiming the Kansas Class 6A singles title last week.

McCaig and Mylavarapu join Alex Martinez-Roca (Castelldefels, Spain) in comprising the 2017 class for the Mustangs. MSU is coming off its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, returning five letterwinners for the 2018 campaign.
