WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State is No. 21 in the latest NCAA Division II ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The Mustangs are coming off a 4-3 loss to UT Tyler on Sunday, Midwestern State is 10-5 with a 2-2 mark in the Lone Star Conference.
UT Tyler and Lubbock Christian are the only two LSC programs ranked higher than MSU. UT Tyler (17-4, 5-1) is No. 6 and Lubbock Christian (16-5, 5-0) is No. 8.
Lubbock Christian defeated the Mustangs at MSU Tennis Center on Friday, 5-2.
This season, the Mustangs have also lost to top-ranked West Florida, 6-1, No. 13-ranked Washburn, 4-0., and No. 28-ranked Nebraska Kearney, 4-3.Â
MSU has posted wins over No. 16-ranked West Alabama, 5-2, No. 29-ranked Auburn Montgomery, 4-3, No. 41-ranked Harding, 4-2, and No. 47-ranked Northwest Missouri State, 5-2.
Germano Setti is 10-3 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs and is No. 18 in the latest rankings. The senior from Brazil has a three-match winning streak, including a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over No. 38 Artiom Dorofeev of UT Tyler. Â Setti lost a hard-fought, three-set battle with No. 4-ranked Kelly Giese of Lubbock Christian earlier this season.
Bruno Sanchez is No. 52 in the rankings. The junior from Spain had a three-match winning streak snapped with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-7 (3) loss at No. 2 singles to No. 50-ranked Carl Wessel of UT Tyler on Sunday. Sanchez is 9-5 this season with a 3-1 record in conference play. Sanchez is 1-2 against nationally ranked opponents, defeating No. 17-ranked Pablo Segura of Lubbock Christian, 6-3, 6-1.
Jose Marquez is right behind Sanchez at No. 53 among Division II singles players. The senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, is 10-5 for MSU this season and is 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents, including a 7-5, 6-2 victory over No. 26-ranked Andres De Los Rios of Lubbock Christian. Marquez also defeated No. 41-ranked Rafael Sabio of West Florida, 6-3, 7-5. No. 10-ranked Samuel Antwi of UT Tyler was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 winner over Marquez at No. 4 singles on Sunday.
Sanchez and
Juan David Duque, who have a three-match winning streak, are ranked No. 17 in doubles with a 6-5 record in the dual-match season. The duo is 11-8 overall, including matches played during the fall campaign and in exhibition duals this spring.
Setti and
Matthew Earle are on a 12-match winning streak at No. 2 doubles for Midwestern State, and the formidable pairing is 13-1 this season, including two wins over nationally ranked foes. This week, the duo climbed to No. 29 in the ITA rankings.
Midwestern State visits No. 34-ranked Cameron for its next dual match on Friday. First serve at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
